INTERNATIONAL PROJECT FINAL

With the end of the 2026 Spring semester, these are the 20 images that I believe tell the best story of how students who are from the diaspora and who are living here in the states. This past semester, I explored my campus’s student population that hailed from outside the United States. As someone who holds traditions that come from another country, I wondered if any of my peers ever felt different amongst their American peers. If the traditions that they’re living and seeing everyday are opposites or similar. So I went searching, armed with two questions: “Are you an international student?” and “Do you have parents who are immigrants?” These two questions led me on a  four-month journey, both on and off-campus, searching for people who were willing to share their experiences as an immigrant or child of immigrants. The first two months were similar to a dormant garden for me, dry and lifeless, but with the promise of future growth. Throughout this project I learned that what gave me difficulty was finding people criteria of being labeled as an international student. Some people were wary of talking to me because of ice, but i made sure to build my boundary with a structure that was safe for them to converse with me so that they wouldn’t jeopardize there safety. Looking back on my process, I discovered that by broadening my question from only are you and international student to, do you come from an immigrant community or if your parents are immigrants. Through this project i learned a lot about my collaborators characters, personal life, struggles and knowledge on where they come from. Everyone i found i either knew, responded to my poll or was mutuals with on instagram. The people I photographed became beautiful portraits that conveyed their stories of the first- and second-generation immigrant experience. It is my hope that viewers of this project truly see and feel the importance of the immigrant experience and its contribution and impact on our communities.

International Project

 (VINCENT)

The international project started when I saw the repercussions of my nations president. I felt appalled that this man’s actions represent me on the national level. I thought about how would immigrants or other’s who are not permanently living here in American feel? Do they agree with what is going on or disagree? What’s their story? How do they feel during this time of social unease and political strife? taken in Akron, Ohio by @mozijah

Spring Break in New York 2026

I took a trip back to New York City - Brooklyn specifically where I was born. Walking around the borough brought back memories. I started to photograph the spaces I use to visit regularly beginning with my old home (slide 3). On my walks I met some strangers and asked to photographed them. (Slides 2, 4, 7 and 9) Although, my trip was short photography in New York is lively and you can observe many more scenes and roles , people and different themes all moving around at the same time. Meanwhile in Ohio you have to create these spaces or drive far to find any decent photographs. taken in New York by @mozijah

JJ’s Dream

This project began when I met JJ, a nine-year-old boy, while doing soccer drills at a field near my dormitory. He was one of the first people I met outside of the university community who lived in the neighborhood across the street from where I stayed. After introducing ourselves, our conversation turned to sports. JJ told me his favorite sport was football and that his dream was to play professionally in the NFL. Hearing this made me look at him with a new sense of curiosity—without judgment. I began to observe not only JJ, but the environment surrounding him, wondering how he lived: where he ate, where his mother bought groceries, where he walked to and from the park to play with friends, and where he attended school. These questions led me to walk the neighborhood and photograph what I saw, because this environment is what JJ lives within every day and what may ultimately shape who he becomes. Though this neighborhood feels unfamiliar to me, it is his everyday reality—its corners fuel his imagination, and its streets serve as his inspiration. This project documents the environment that JJ inhabits daily. taken in Akron, Ohio by @mozijah
