To wash, or not to wash? That is the question! 🤔🍗

We teamed up with @mphbyu to ask students their thoughts on washing raw chicken. Spoiler: Most were on the right track, you don’t need to wash or rinse raw chicken.

Rinsing raw chicken can splash bacteria over your kitchen surfaces, including things you don’t plan on cooking, like fresh fruit (gross! 🤢).

To stay safe, just head straight to the pan. Cooking chicken to an internal temperature of 165°F is all you need to kill off bacteria like Salmonella and Campylobacter.

Even though you shouldn’t wash raw chicken, always remember to thoroughly wash your hands after handling any raw meat.

Today is World Health Day! This year's theme is "Together for health. Stand with science." This holiday was established by the WHO with the focus on urgent global health priorities, such as climate change, mental health, or maternal care.

Fieldwork Spotlight: "For my field work I went to Nairobi Kenya for 4 months. I conducted qualitative research on maternal healthcare access for women living in the Kibera slum (largest slum in Africa). I interviewed them on prenatal care, labor and delivery, and post natal care. Another project I had was working with a local clinic for victims of gender based violence. For the clinic, I wrote a ten-week support group curriculum that they could conduct with survivors to raise awareness and provide support. I also evaluated various programs in Nairobi on how well they implemented family-based health values into their programs. I evaluated the GBV clinic as well as a local orphanage I volunteered at weekly on how well they "thought family" and provided services that were family-oriented or took into account family dynamics.

'I really enjoyed my time in Kenya. I learned so much and had a great experience doing my best to be aware of cultural dynamics while I was doing my work. Although unrelated to my field work, I met my fiancé while I was there so I'm excited about having this culture as part of my life forever." - Sephora Giraud-Carrier
