MPS // One Rack, Many Possibilities

The Dataset – Australian Dance Party, Riverside Theatres, Parramatta

Touring with Australian Dance Party for The Dataset, we ran the whole show off a single Mac Mini. A contemporary dance work using lighting to portray an AI character, Ethan, required tight, integrated control across multiple systems.

QLab ran as master, handling audio playback, PA tuning, and audio distribution across FOH, auditorium, and monitor sends. It sent OSC to Chamsys MagicQ for house lighting control over sACN, and MIDI commands to Resolume Arena for projection and control of 16 Astera Titan Tubes used onstage and overhead to represent Ethan.

QLab 5’s timeline function made show tweaks simple. Chamsys handled the house rig and made network patching to multiple sACN nodes effortless. Resolume’s sound detection capabilities let Ethan’s voice ripple surreal effects through the audience.

The rig stayed in Sydney for a week, with house techs running the show via a single QLab “spacebar” start. As always, remote support was on standby via TeamViewer — and a cheeky webcam meant I could keep programming overnight remotely from my hotel bed after the theatre techs kicked us out for the night.

The Nature of Things – Glebe Park, Canberra

People were invited to enter an enchanted forest and explore what creatures came out after dark, this interactive event took outdoor theatrical experiences to another level. Lighting and audio design was taken on through my role with Dionysus, which required a sleek, powerful and waterproof rig, but I was keen to keep the sleek design going for the control solution.

Can one computer run an entire production? Of course it can.

One Mac Mini handled it all. QLab for analog and network audio, Chamsys MagicQ, L-Acoustics Network Manager, plus scripts and OSC triggers for full control, with TeamViewer for remote support.

The rig ran daily like clockwork, with a simple wall trigger starting the show from QLab. A wireless network let stage managers hold or start the show from an iPad. Remote access meant I could jump in anytime for troubleshooting.

This “one rack” mentality isn’t new, just rare.
Why build a clunky marquee with two consoles and full crews every day, when you can just punch numbers into QLab and go home?
