“In order to be a mentor, and an effective one, one must care. You must care… Know what you know and care about the person, care about what you know and care about the person you’re sharing with.” – Maya Angelou

A few months ago, we had the pleasure of attending a Tea Etiquette Brunch along side @firstladiesyouthleadershipfdn

We had an incredible time connecting with our mentees and their family members, embracing proper table etiquette and indulging in some sweet treats as well!!

Swipe to see our beautiful First Ladies as well as a few of our founders 😉

Dolores Huerta, born in Dawson, New Mexico in 1930, is a labor and human rights activist. Throughout her years of activism, Dolores has founded and supported many organizations. In 1955, Dolores co-founded the Stockton chapter of Community Service Organization - an organization aimed at fostering economic improvements for Hispanics in Stockton, CA. In 1962, she founded the National Farm Workers Association which fought for the rights of agricultural workers. Dolores also proved to be about that action when she helped organize the Delano Strike (1965-1970) which led to improved conditions and higher wages for grape workers in Dalano, CA.
Dolores years of activism has resulted in improved working conditions, better wages, and better union contracts for farmers and agriculture workers in minority communities.
Melanin Queens would like to say Thank You to Dolores Huerta for fighting for the social and economic advancement of minority workers in America. #melanin #melaninqueen by @mqf4change

Puerto Rican nationalist Lolita Lebron was a tireless fighter and a revolutionary who led the attack on the U.S. congress on March 1st, 1954. She led her male accomplices Rafael Miranda, Irvin Flores, and Andres Cordero to storm the House of Representatives in the name of true independence for Puerto Rico. They slipped their way into the House Gallery, said an Our Father, shouted "Vive Puerto Rico Libre" as she waved a Puerto Rican flag, and opened fire on House members wounding five congressmen. Upon being arrested, Lolita yelled “I did not come to kill anyone, I came to die for my country.” After serving 25 years of prison, all nationalists would have their sentences commuted by US president Jimmy Carter and released in 1979, and she continued to fight for the freedom of her country. She is a very important figure in history for the struggle of independence in Puerto Rico.
Melanin Queens would like to pay tribute to Lolita Lebrón, whose strong simple and rebellious spirit has transcended until today and is an example for rebellious Latin American women.
