Allegory of Fortune (La Fortuna)- Salvator Rosa c.1615-1673.

A fantastic piece by talented Italian Baroque artist and creative polymath, Salvator Rosa. This very piece was deemed satirical of the papal court of Pope Alexander VII in 1658 and Rosa was urged not to display the painting in public. Despite this warning, Rosa exhibited the artwork at the Pantheon in Rome risking being jailed or excommunicated. The intervention by the Pope’s very own brother, spared Rosa this fate. The artwork has many symbolisms that speak to the satirical commentary as observed by Rosa (in particularly the animals representing members of the papal court).

“Audentes Fortuna Iuvat” - It normally should. It often does.

The portraits above are from a US-based painter called Arthur Kwon Lee (@arthurkwonlee). Arthur is truly an artist in every sense, in that he is unapologetically bold (a proponent of free speech & thinking!), creative and confident and as such these traits are imbued in and transmitted from his art. It culminates in unique and meaningful paintings filled with skill and reverence for the Lord. Do feel free and check out his other artwork. The above pieces are my personal favourites:

1. “Christ Pantocrator.”

2. “The Alpha & Omega.”

3. “Men are here to work, women are here to play.”

“Mars and Venus Surprised by Vulcan” - Alexander-Charles Guillemort c. 1786-1831.

It was said that Vulcan cunningly created a snare forged from bronze chains so fine that not even a god could see them. He then draped them over his marital bed pegging each corner of the net to the bed-post.

For completeness, in the upper right corner of this painting resides the remain Roman Mythological gods looking on.
