Getting into an accident is stressful enough. Figuring out what happens next shouldn’t make it worse.

I had the opportunity to work with IIARI to walk consumers through the insurance claims process, from what to do immediately after a loss to communicating with your insurance company and understanding what happens as the claim moves forward.

🙃 Walked into my office today and discovered my son apparently chose violence against my monitor.

Just look at this thing. 😭

I’m stressed. 😮‍💨😂 But there are two little silver linings here:

First, I apparently have $200 in rewards points, so shoutout to Past Carlos for unknowingly looking out for Present Carlos. 😂

Second, I checked my renters insurance and I believe I have a computer equipment endorsement that may cover accidental damage like this, subject to the policy terms and deductible of $500. Which it’s like a $2500 monitor so 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨 So now I get to experience the claims process from the other side of the desk. 😂

Insurance agent by day.
Insurance claimant by night. 🥲

And THIS is why I tell people to actually know what’s included in their policy. Sometimes the coverage you forgot you had becomes very relevant when your toddler decides your monitor needed a new design. 🙃

I’ll keep y’all updated on whether the claim is covered.

A few months ago I decided to do something Crazy and Give away over $2500 of Gas ⛽️ and Pizza 🍕 to fuel both the cars 🚗 and people 🧍‍♂️ in them! Grateful to have partnered with @bigtonyspizzari and @americanperformancegas to make this a possibility!

🚨 RHODE ISLAND BUSINESS OWNERS: IF YOU HAVE A DBA, READ THIS.

This is one of those new requirements that could easily get missed.

Rhode Island changed how Trade Names, commonly called DBAs, are handled. Records that used to be maintained by your city or town were transferred to the RI Department of State, and Trade Names are now subject to an annual renewal requirement.

📅 Renewal period: September 1 – November 30
💰 Cost to renew: $0
💻 Can be filed online: Yes

If your Trade Name was transferred from one of Rhode Island’s cities or towns, 2026 is the first renewal year for those transferred records.

And don’t ignore it just because there’s no fee.

Failure to complete a required renewal can eventually result in the Trade Name being involuntarily cancelled.

One important distinction: this applies to Rhode Island Trade Names. If you have an LLC or corporation using a registered Fictitious Business Name, that’s a different type of filing and the Department of State says those fictitious names do not require this annual renewal.

So if you registered a DBA years ago at Providence City Hall, Cranston, Warwick, Pawtucket, or another RI municipality, don’t assume you’re all set because you’ve never had to do this before.

Go check your Trade Name and get the renewal done before November 30.

And yes… it’s actually free. Rhode Island finally sent us a business filing that doesn’t ask for another $50. 😂

🚨 Already on an IRS payment plan? Don’t assume you can just keep adding to the tab. 😭😂

Filing a new tax return does not automatically cancel your existing payment plan. But if you owe again and can’t pay the new balance, your agreement may need to be revised and you could risk defaulting on the existing arrangement.

And if this keeps happening every year?

At some point, we have to stop focusing only on the payment plan and figure out why you keep owing. 👀

Your W-4, estimated payments, self-employment income, or tax planning may need some attention.

🪣 Fix the leak, not just the bucket.
