Savannah, GA is a city dripping with southern charm, mystery, magic, a few ghosts and an incredibly unique history.

The summer of ‘94 was my introduction to this little slice of paradise at the ripe old age of 12. The buzz about town surrounded the publishing of John Berendt’s “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” - a true story focused on a few of Savanah’s most colorful characters. Trouble was the book was sold out everywhere! Years passed, I snagged a copy of the book, a movie adaptation was released, and my fascination grew. This local scandal - involving Jim Williams, Billy Hansford, and the Lady Chablis - only added to the mystery and allure of Savannah culture.

Over the years I’ve visited many times and have yet to tire of the city’s welcoming charm, colorful inhabitants, and the history lesson that never ends! In the photos you’ll see a few of my favorites - deliberate repeats - and some new points of interest, all with some fun facts that’ll hopefully make you want to visit for feel as though you already have! And if you’re so inclined to take an Old Town Trolley tour the only guide to have is Big E.!

My recent day trip to Charleston was purely the precursor to the upcoming week on the surface of the sun. Despite what any of you “summer people” say the -ber months are in sight and I can’t wait!

But I digress, Charleston was as lively and full of color as ever. I’ve always enjoyed a good door-scape as it tells a bit about the inhabitant and their personality. Charleston’s doors are full of personality and I wondered, why is the city so colorful??

A little research revealed that the bright, colorful aesthetic stems from a mix of Colonial Caribbean design traditions, post-Civil War necessity, and legendary local folklore. The signature pastels were originally championed for practicality—like reflecting the oppressive Southern heat (hear that summer people…oppressive!) and warding off insects or evil spirits (haint blue).

While visiting Tybee Island earlier this week I had the pleasure of meeting an exceptionally sweet lady. She was sporting an “America 250” headband and I commented how cute it was - one small compliment was all it took and we were fast friends.

Unprompted, she went on to tell me how she fled Cuba so many years ago, seeking asylum and applying for citizenship. She described how so many who remain there live in abject poverty, where civil liberties are largely non-existent, and experience extreme censorship. For those unfamiliar, Cuba, under past and present regimes, is a proclaimed Marxist-Leninist social republic (Socialism) with a one-party political framework, Communism. One needn’t study the impacts of those -isms too closely to understand that they’re incompatible with American values.

Lina beamed with excitement when she talked about her life post-Cuba and wore her citizenship as a badge of honor. You could see her genuine joy, appreciation, and pride for America and how happy she was to celebrate the upcoming 250 festivities.

Shortly after, I drove by a flag planted on some driftwood in a marsh - a waving symbol of all the freedoms that we collectively enjoy even when we disagree. It’s that same flag that inspired Lina and so many others to reach for our shores, earn their citizenship, pledge their allegiance, and stand proud for our shared American values. 🇺🇸

This year’s Piketon High School alumni event (26 years for me) was particularly meaningful as it marked my mother’s 50th Graduation Anniversary, this year’s honor class. It was great to see so many alumni reconnecting and celebrating the history, memories, and watching this year’s scholarship recipients step in to their next chapter!

Throughout one’s life, we meet a variety of individuals who leave an indelible mark, often becoming sources of inspiration. Many of those individuals are teachers.

Enter Iris Wardlow Wheeler, who taught English my sophomore year of high school. She didn’t just teach; she prepared you, reinforced concepts, demonstrated accountability, and modeled the importance of professionalism.

Today, I had the pleasure of celebrating the release of her first book at a reading and signing event. It was a wonderful afternoon spent catching up with old friends, seeing another former teacher (I’m looking at you, Lori), who was equally wonderful, and realizing that 28 years later, Iris is still inspiring, even outside the classroom. taken in Ohio by @mrba.moore
