In 2020 I composed a little classical-ish song for solo guitar, but never actually attempted to play it. Recently I dug it up, made a few tweaks (where my fingers couldn’t physically stretch to the notes I’d written) and worked it all out. Here it is. Huzzah. by @mrbengreenfield

My album “Or Current Resident” will be released digitally on Bandcamp and streaming platforms on 3/13!

As the country was apocalypse-hopping between the pandemic and 2024 election, I wrote and recorded these songs at home, late at night, over drum machines and herbal tea.

Befitting that history, the songs’ lyrics are set against a backdrop of catastrophe—the narrators face everything from tornados to pending execution to the all-out decimation of humanity—yet amidst the devastation, they find laughter and love.

The album is graced by a group of musicians much more talented than me: @ryan.jewell, @brendan.eder, @jeffucurtin, @henryrsolomon, @ajanik07, @conrew, @darius_christian, and @shanetylermckillop. I’m grateful to every one of them, as well as to @gold.fix.music for mastering and to @chrisgregori for the incredible artwork above.

NEW SONG: “Other People”

The story behind this song—one of my favorites on the album—is a doozy, so bear with me.

You know the band Sparks?

I don’t.

I’ve seen 100 pictures of them, and they look like their music would be so fun and offbeat—like they’d be right up my alley. But I’ve intentionally never listened to them. The reason: I got the silly idea to try to write a song that would sound like I imagined their music would sound, based purely on how they look.

“Other People” was my attempt to channel their visual vibe—or at least, that’s how it started. I ended up arranging it for a bunch of acoustic instruments, and attempting to make it sound like a bluegrass band just starting to come up on some bad acid.

Anyway, I doubt this sounds anything like Sparks, but let me know if it does! Maybe I’ll actually listen to them someday.
