Vietnam in Black & White 🇻🇳

Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha & Ha Giang.

Five days riding motorbikes through the mountains of Ha Giang. A wildly under-prepared two-day trek and one night camping deep in the jungle, exploring Hang Pygmy — one of the world’s largest caves. From the north to central Vietnam, every day brought something completely different.

Travelling far from home has always been a passion of mine. Maybe it’s the unfamiliar culture, the food, the journey, the unknown — or simply being on the other side of the world with little more than a loose plan.

But mostly, it’s about doing what I love most: capturing moments and allowing time to stand still, even if only for a second.

Because while the world keeps moving and life carries on, there’s something special about slowing down every once in a while and taking in the beauty of the simplest things around us.

Bustling streets. Quiet faces. People going about their daily lives. Food markets. Ancient pagodas. Buddha statues. Dramatic rock formations. Endless mountain roads. Landscapes that feel almost impossible to be real.

Vietnam is chaotic, beautiful, raw and unforgettable.

A year ago, I had the honour of documenting @neil.agius Designed to Fail swim — 7 swims over 7 days around Gozo.

One of the things I took away from Neil throughout this challenge was that we all face obstacles every day of our lives. Perseverance is undoubtedly an important part of success, but so too is understanding our limits, adapting, and learning from every experience along the way.

And then there are the numbers…

Neil:
271.1 km covered
105 hours
43,886 calories burned

Me:
4,617 images captured
204.7 GB of files
1,539 images shortlisted and edited

Slightly different kinds of endurance. 😅

On a personal level, this was an incredible experience to be part of. It gave me the opportunity to see first-hand what goes into taking on a challenge of this scale — the preparation, the determination, the setbacks, the teamwork, and the people behind the scenes offering their support every step of the way.

It was also a completely different way of experiencing Gozo. Spending so many hours out at sea meant watching the island constantly change around us — from the soft light of early morning to the harsh midday sun and the long shadows cast across Gozo’s cliffs as the day drew on. The same coastline could look completely different just a few hours apart, providing an incredible backdrop to an already remarkable challenge.

A year later, it remains one of those experiences I’m incredibly grateful to have documented and been a small part of. taken in Gozo by @mrcicc
