For DJ Fisher, “Just A Kid From Wichita” is bigger than a basketball camp or a slogan — it’s a statement about identity, humility, resilience, and giving back to the city that shaped him.The phrase reflects the idea that no matter how far someone goes in sports, business, or life, they never forget where they came from. Fisher has consistently tied the movement back to Wichita’s culture, its basketball history, and the people who poured into him as a kid.Growing up in Wichita, Fisher has spoken openly about losing friends to gang violence, suicide, and substance abuse. He created the program as what he called a “positive distraction” for youth; a way to expose kids to opportunity, mentorship, and hope through sports.The hometown itself represents:Community mentors who opened doors for him, especially through the historic M.E.F.S.E.C. recreation center, now the Lynette Woodard Recreation Center.A city with deep basketball roots and overlooked talent.Pride in being from Wichita even while working at high levels in the sports industry.A responsibility to return home and create opportunities for the next generation. by @mrdjfisher

Yo! I’m DJ Fisher. I was born without knowing it, but soon from the moment of my birth, I was naturally selected to be strong, survive, and to overcome the challenges of being the World’s Most Endangered Species - A Black Man. It is the unconditional love of God and my family that prepared but soothed away the disappointment when this world stereotyped me, created traps, challenges underestimated my capabilities, and attempted to deprive me of fair opportunities. Listen! I was able to thrive anyway.Because of my faith and I am willing to work towards more positive outcomes, hate does not intimidate me, discourage me from excellence, or cause me to fret. I am chosen, handpicked by God himself. The remedy is to outnumber and overwhelm those negative individuals and systems with peace and positivity and change as many lives as I possibly can. You see, I am a solider, a steward in search of territory and opportunity that will forever expand the borders of our acceptance, peace, recognition, and potential.Statistically, I do not belong here but through hardwork, effort and focus. Legacy focuses on what will endure. It's about passing on things of lasting value to those who will live on after us. Legacy involves living intentionally and aiming to build into the next generations. I truly believe Genesis 22:17 was written about my Grandmother and Granddaddy. It reads: “I will certainly bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies.” by @mrdjfisher
