It goes without saying that everyone has their own unique story. Every journey is different, yet so many of them are incredibly similar.

Why is Pride important?

It’s not an overwhelming flood of rainbow propaganda meant to make people uncomfortable. It’s not about pushing an agenda, and it certainly isn’t a celebration of “demonic individuals” (seriously, what?).

For me, Pride helped save my happiness. In many ways, it helped save my existence.

Pride gave hope to the little boy in this photo—the one with all the sass packed into a single picture. It gave him hope that one day he would be okay. That he would grow up and find acceptance, community, and joy.

I was fortunate. I had great friends and a loving family. I was strong enough to keep the hate, judgment, and shame at bay. But even then, I was never 100% myself.

I celebrate Pride for this little boy who was stronger than he ever should have had to be. I celebrate for the many beautiful young people who are scared, uncertain, or still finding their place in the world. I celebrate for the older generations who spent so much of their lives hiding parts of themselves out of fear. And I celebrate for those who don’t yet understand, in the hope that one day we can meet each other with compassion and understanding.
