Woodie King Jr., the beloved godfather of Black theatre, has joined the Ancestors. For nearly six decades, he uplifted artists and created space for voices to be seen, heard, and celebrated through The New Federal Theatre.Our Artistic Director, Jamil Jude, and Founding Artistic Director, Kenny Leon, were both inspired by Mr. King’s work and had the honor of connecting with him in 2021 through the SDC Journal to discuss the complexities of Black theatre.He will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on through all who knew him. Sending our heartfelt condolences to Woodie’s family and friends. by @mrjdjude

This isn’t theory for Jamil Jude — it’s literally his job description.Meet the Artistic Director of True Colors Theatre Company in Atlanta — an organization leading the future of Black theatre.In this week’s Artist Next Door, Jamil shares why the arts must remain an active force in the world — not a passive one.Because the stage is not the point.What the art empowers people to do is the point..Jamil Jude is the Artistic Director of @truecolorstheatre , a producer, a playwright, and dramaturg committed to socially relevant art and community impact. He is the Co-Founder of The New Griots Festival, celebrating and advancing emerging Black artists in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Prior to True Colors, he served as Artistic Programming Associate at Park Square Theatre and previously as National New Play Network Producer-in-Residence at Mixed Blood Theatre. He has led productions for Olney, Forum Theatre, Curious Theatre, History Theatre, Theatre in the Round and more. Jamil is also an Affiliated Writer at The Playwrights’ Center. He holds a BA from Colgate University and has received multiple leadership and producing fellowships. by @mrjdjude
