Majoie Hajary (1921-2017) was a Dutch-French composer and pianist known for blending Western classical music with Indian musical elements. Born in Paramaribo, Suriname, she pursued her musical education at the Amsterdam Conservatory and later studied composition in Paris under Nadia Boulanger and Louis Aubert. Her marriage to Roland Garros, an Air France director and nephew of the famed aviator, led her to live in various countries, including India, which profoundly influenced her musical style.

In 1967, Hajary released the album "New Sound From India," a pioneering work that transcribed traditional Indian ragas into Western musical notation, a feat rarely accomplished by Western-trained musicians. This album exemplifies her innovative approach to fusing Eastern and Western musical traditions.

Throughout her career, Hajary composed over a hundred works, including "Requiem pour Mahatma Gandhi" (1968) and "Chants du Gita Govinda" (1974), which further showcase her unique synthesis of diverse musical influences. Her compositions often reflect her multicultural background and experiences, seamlessly integrating elements from various musical traditions.

Hajary's contributions to music have been recognized posthumously, with efforts to revive and perform her works, highlighting her role as a trailblazer in world music and cross-cultural composition.
