What is Barber Republic?

As somebody who has lived and breathed barbering, won and lost over the years, thankfully I’m still here, and I don’t think anybody, love me or hate me can ever doubt my love for this profession! This will be my gift to the craft I love❤️

What would you like it to be? 💈🤝🌍

There’s always been a lot of discussion in our industry about commission splits, particularly the expectation of a 50/50 split.

And I completely understand why barbers want to earn the best money they can. We all do.

But having owned a barbershop for many years, I think there’s another side to the conversation that sometimes gets overlooked.

It’s easy to assume that if a barber receives 50%, the business owner keeps the other 50%.

In reality, that percentage contributes towards running costs, taxes, maintenance, investment and the day-to-day responsibilities of keeping a business operating.

And that’s before the owner takes a wage or makes any profit.

I also think it’s important to recognise that not every barber brings the same value to a business.

An experienced barber with a loyal clientele who consistently generates strong revenue may well justify a higher commission percentage.

Equally, a barber who’s building their clientele and relies on the business to provide customers and marketing is in a different position.

Of course, self-employed barbers have their own expenses, taxes and responsibilities. Their skills and professionalism are what keep clients coming back.

This isn’t about suggesting 50% is too much or that barbers shouldn’t negotiate better earnings.

It’s about recognising that a commission split isn’t a profit split, and running a barbershop involves costs and risks that aren’t always visible.

A fair arrangement should reflect the value both parties bring and allow everyone to succeed.

I’d be interested to hear the views of both barbers and shop owners.

If barbers, hairdressers and business owners worked more closely together, could we create a trusted network where experienced professionals help fill empty chairs in other businesses on their busiest days?

More earning potential for barbers, fewer missed opportunities for businesses and a more sustainable industry.

Maybe the way forward isn’t just negotiating a bigger percentage, but finding better ways for us all to work together.

WHAT THE FUCK IS A TASTE LEVEL?

The most important technique or tool in your tool belt will always be your taste level! Loving the style of work you do, understanding why you love it and going all in to develop it!!! that is the key to a long and happy career. It doesn’t matter what side of the wheel you are, modern, classic or even balanced, once you’re done learning how to cut hair, that’s when the journey really begins, it gets better as you get stronger and you may even learn to appreciate other tastes and respect what lies behind them, it doesn’t mean you have to do them. I have friends all over the world in this industry, some do unbelievable work, visually I hate it, but technically I fucking LOVE how they do it, that’s what makes this craft of ours so fucking great, a common respect to everyone who does it right🙏🏻

Is this the best haircut in the world?

I’ve seen this haircut done in @schorembarbier

I’ve seen it done live on stage @barbersocietylive

I’ve seen it many times more on this platform, and every time I see it again I think, how the fuck does he nail it everytime 🤷‍♂️

Is it my taste level? Nope! Would I like to have a punk rocker/psycho clientele? Definitely not, but everytime I see my aul bud @the_bloody_butcher pull this out of his bag of tricks I always get a little jealous.

To anyone new to my page or indeed new to barbering, these are the type of barbers and haircuts you should be following, learning about, not necessarily how to do them but how and why they came about, not some tik tok trendy little prick who has zero respect for the craft and culture that they’re leeching off. As bad as things have gotten I’m glad I was around before and during the barber boom where I got to travel the world and make friends with the best in the business, hang out in prep room before shows where we laughed till we pissed ourselves, where we cheered each other on, pushed each other to do better, but most of all, we never took ourselves too seriously, but our job, our craft our culture, fuck yea, we took that shit very seriously and always will until the day we drop dead 💀

ATTENTION ALL BARBERS 💈

A couple of months ago I shared one of my buddy @rossnagle stories where he was pointing out and drawing attention to the decline of the tattoo industry at the hands of the bad side of social media, the fast track courses, the corporations who fuel it through influencer culture, trend chasing and the people who have zero respect for the craft and tradition of such a beautiful and ancient trade.

I pointed out that by just changing the word TATTOO with BARBER, we are in the same war, before anyone says it’s not that deep, yes it is a fucking war.

I have been a barber most of my life, Ross has been a tattooer most of his life, we grew up in the same city and have been friends for years.

He has a great business, I have a great business so posting stuff like this isn’t a desperate attempt to gain traction or customers, these posts and videos are for the love of our trades that are dying before our very eyes.

Barbering like tattooing is about craft, tradition and doing it right, the side of the taste and style spectrum is personal to you, but at the core of it, it must be done right, respect for the past with one eye on the future. Working together for the one common goal of the betterment of the industry. We have a chance if we all work to the same set of standards. Stop the dancing, stop the clowning for likes, stop the snake oil sales and stop making fucking idiots famous in the hope that the powers that be throw you a few crumbs.

BARBER COACHES, a stain on the industry or a helpful pool of “experts” to drag us all out of poverty and make us millionaires?

Let’s have a discussion!

As always your comments are welcome 🙏🏻

Let’s talk about this one and for all, get off the fucking fence and fight for what we’re going to lose before it’s too late.
You can talk about vat cuts, apprenticeship grants, business rate relief? It doesn’t matter a fuck if we don’t do something to educate the people coming into the industry now. Barbershops are dying before our eyes and we’re just shrugging our shoulders and blaming everyone but ourselves, remember one thing, if nothing changes, nothing changes!
The revolution is coming 💈

As always, your input is welcome! 🙏🏻

Would you take cover in your shop for holidays, sick days or even tool up for peak times around pay day etc? Great question from Anthony La Ban today on @thenoblebarberpodcast would love to hear what everyone is thinking on this subject!

The biggest problem we’re all facing at the moment is lack of quality barbers…. Or is it lack of quality barbers available for work when you need them? What has caused this seemingly gigantic shortage across the board? Barbering has never been so popular, it has never been so visible, so where are all the barbers?

As always everyone’s feedback is hugely appreciated 🤝
