There are only a few days in life that are simply perfect. The 2026 Alpenbrevet was one of those days. Breathtaking scenery @andermatt_swiss_alps , lots of cyclists having the time of their lives, espresso “al Bar” in Airolo, sunshine, and a big cycling family at the finish line.

Same procedure as every winter: the seven summits of the Bottwartal. 1200 meters of elevation gain over 46 kilometers in temperatures just below zero degrees. 48 hours that will remain in my memory forever: @oetztalerradmarathon 2025. Not the finish time I had hoped for, but every second was worth it. Actually, the 4th should have been my last participation. I crossed the finish line with that thought in mind. But then I remembered the cowbells at Kühtai, the thunderous noise of the spectators at the Brenner Pass, the chase at the Jaufen Pass, the silence at the Timmelsjoch and the last few meters to the finish line. Could I participate again in my early 60s? Don‘t stop believing…

If you want to quit cycling, ride the Ötztal Glacier Road. The asphalt will laugh at you for 12 kilometers because you’re trying so hard. But eventually, you’ll get there. seven summits of the Bottwartal 2024. No big mountains - just vineyards. Small, nasty ramps. In the end, it was almost 1,300 meters of elevation in just 48 kilometers. The ascent to Orimento was the surprising beast in September. The last kilometres extremely steep, bad road and at the end the path ends in nothing. Somewhere a dog barks and you hope that it is chained or at least well fed in the last few days. At the same time you have a view of Lake Lugano and Lake Como. The highlight, however, was the stop at the bar @barbazzi2014. Super delicious cake and best espresso. The scenery on the tour around Lake Como is absolutely stunning. But it’s also not that easy: you have to fight your way between deep potholes on the road, scooters, speeding Fiat 500s and trucks. Once you’ve reached the northern tip, there are no more excuses, just pedal until you get back on the other side. And in between there’s the special stage up to Ghisallo. I always throw all my pocket money into the church’s offering box - so that I’m spared the flame. I started in the summer sunshine, but unfortunately it quickly turned into a pretty cold autumn day. Nevertheless, it’s always a great experience to return to the streets of Como in the evening.
