This is definitely the age where the entire Jay Z catalogue resonates in some form or another. Songs like Coming of Age and Feelin’ it, almost making the cut with several puns on “Feelin’ it”, like knee pain lol, but it’s “So Ambitious” that wins the day (1 of 5). So Ambitious “Still”, I’m still hungry! The athlete - party promoter - go getter - hustler - creative - sales and brand leader - blah, blah, blah are all still living and breathing inside of me and shows up much differently, than it did at age 28. Ambition as I’ve come to know, is one of my most misunderstood qualities. Never content. As ambitious as I’ve always been and celebrated in my youth, as an adult I was told ‘my ambition’ was more or less bad, during two significant season’s of my life. I can say in reflection, I can now understand why or how ambition can get the best of you, if you’re not careful. The narrative of being ‘content in life’ was taught as the better, Christian like attitude versus suppressing ambition, associated with greed, yet positive tones with some negative depending who you ask about opinions of “ambition” (2 of 5). The Wiser, in a world that offers equity and participation awards just for showing up, the accountability gets lost. Great effort and energy spent in the wrong places, can be the rise of a future need to unlearn. I was supposed to be more content with my life and role, during two blossoming, capitalistic seasons and to be less curious. In my mind: It’s like succeeding too soon, or getting a good job, versus a great job - hitting the mark, but not exceeding expectations. The difference between being excellent over average. Don’t get me wrong, my perspective is centered in learning from the most finite or minuscule to be better or improve, rather than “just accepting” - what’s simply being offered. It’s confidence in work ethic, being better and doing better (3 of 5)… This is the power to say “No Deal”, “No Thank you”, “Having Standards” and rejecting the mislabeling from the fallout. Sometimes the biggest lessons, opportunities and discoveries happen when you slow things down, not to mention you learn a lot. From life long friends, mentors, art & storytelling, to starting a business, tapping into my creative self in a place where no one knows you to judge you.
