I get asked very often by students and upcoming musicians how do you learn to MD / band, and for years, my answer was always the same: “It just happened.”

Years of playing with different musicians, both in church and outside of church, naturally led to moments where I had to step up and direct the band.

But the other day, I realised that wasn’t the full story.

Yes, those experiences played a huge part in shaping me, but before I ever stood in front of a band, I first sat under someone else’s leadership.

That someone was @samuelbellaofficial .

For several years, I had the privilege of sitting under his musical direction, especially during a yearly event where we’d spend weeks preparing and serving together.

Looking back now, I realise just how much of an impact he had on the musician and musical director I’ve become. So this is simply me saying: thank you.

To the upcoming musicians, we all need someone who’s gone before us. Whether it’s in music, ministry, business, or life, having a mentor is invaluable. Growth requires humility, the willingness to sit, listen, learn, and be led before leading others.

As David played, the troubling spirit left. Peace followed.

There’s something about music. It reaches where words can’t, settles what feels restless, and brings a quiet like nothing else does.

Like when David played before Saul, and what was heavy lifted, if only for a moment.

“But whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.” -1 Samuel 16:23

Another year older.. 🎈

I’m taking a minute to pause and reflect on how much this past year has shaped me. There have been highs and lows, moments of clarity and moments of uncertainty, but through it all, I’ve been grounded.

Since the beginning of the month, everyday I have been singing this song in my head. It just wouldn’t leave me. I guess it’s a reminder.

A reminder that no matter what comes or goes, I’m not standing on my own strength.

As I step into a new year of life, I do so with a grateful heart. Grateful for growth, for lessons, for grace, for a great community and @vanessabernice for being the amazing wife and mother that she is.
