For Spring 2026 Artist-in-Residence Lex Marie @thelexmarie , materials carry memory.

Drawing from her lived experience as a Black mother, Marie’s practice transforms familiar materials (such as school uniforms and pencils to belts, report cards, and hospital blankets) into charged objects that examine systems of care and control.

During her residency at McColl Center, Marie brought that material language into a new medium: printmaking. Working alongside Collaborative Printmaking Apprentice Caroline Wingerd @carolinewingerd.art , Marie explored how ideas central to her practice could shift through the repetition, layering, and process of screenprinting.

Through conversation, experimentation, proofing, and revision, the pair developed “Black Maternal Health Flag,” a new limited-edition print created in McColl Center’s Printmaking Studio.

The fruits of this labor reflect something central to our mission at McColl Center: giving artists time and space to create while opening doors to new processes, equipment, and people.

What else can a practice become when given room to experiment?

For Lex, one answer emerged in the Printmaking Studio.

“Black Maternal Health Flag” is now available to collect.

30 × 22 inches, Screenprint on 250 gsm Fabriano Unica paper, limited edition of 100. Signed and editioned in pencil.

a brief glimpse into a year documenting at @mccollcenter . I remember like 2 years back @asajacksonart asking where did I see ‘working hands’ growing into and the answer was open and vague, I’d just like to see the project expand to cover artists of different backgrounds and mediums not knowing that ending up at McColl Center would happen.

I can honestly say I’ve spoken more about my approach, practice and work more in the past year than I have since I’ve started and I’m slowly but surely getting more comfortable sharing where it’s all coming from.

I’ve met some incredible individuals that are doing amazing and impactful work that has inspired and challenged me to push and experiment within my own practice.
