This one hits hard. 😢 I’m so grateful that Josh and I rushed back to Canberra to spend the last week with my nan in her final days and to say goodbye before she passed away yesterday. 💔 I had been promising her for years that I would return home for a visit and when I walked in to her room her face lit up and she said “I’ve been waiting for you”. 🥺 For those that didn’t know her, my nan was a one of kind. A woman of her generation, yet never confined by its ideals. She had qualities very similar to my mum, her daughter-in-law. Like my mother, people were drawn to her and adored being around her. When I lost my mum at 15, my nan stepped up and helped raise me. She was always there no matter what I needed. Only a phone call away and always having a bed and home for me to escape to in troubling times. She never judged me, never mocked my ambitions, and always stood by me 100%. She believed in my dreams and championed me, even when I doubted myself. She encouraged me to chase opportunities in the United States, knowing Canberra couldn’t offer what I needed. And even though I was 7,500 miles away, she made sure I knew she was still just a phone call away. At my cousin’s wedding years ago, the MC walked around with a microphone asking people to tell a story or say something about the brides. She walked up to my nan and asked her to share something about my cousin Sal. “She’s my hero,” nan said, then pointed to me sitting behind her. “And this fella here. They’re both my heroes, and I couldn’t be prouder of both of them.” I will never forget that day. But nan, you had it wrong…you’re my hero. I am so proud to be your grandson. And it’s okay…I’ve got it from here. I love you more than words can ever express. I will see you on the other side. ❤️ taken in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory by @mrnatejones
