New work! Shoot art direction.

The Vollebak Rock Jacket is at once absurd and revolutionary, primitive but highly crafted, and making use of an advanced material technology. Built out of 5mm x 5mm slate tiles with a neoprene backing, it looks like a glitching Minecraft texture pack. Or something the Star Wars costume department dreamt up, brutalist smart casual for a Coruscant cocktail party. It might also mark the beginning of a new chapter in geological history, the arrival of wearable rock.

An incredible feat of engineering from @nick_vollebak and @sat20100 and his team at Vollebak. This jacket is truly a one of a kind.

It needed an art direction that felt monolithic and achingly modern. Treating the jacket like a huge shard of rock, we shot it from unusual angles and paired it alongside real pieces of slate.

Brilliantly shot as ever by @sunleestudio with @izzysteer_ also on art direction duties.

New work! A very unique art direction.

Vollebak Sonic Jacket. Pt 1: The Lab

This Jacket fires frequencies from 4 Hz to 20,000 Hz directly into your body.

Humans have used frequency and patterned sound to change how they feel for thousands of years – generating calm, ecstasy and even a little bit of enlightenment. Now Vollebak have taken these ancient ideas and used them in a new kind of transcendental technology, a jacket loaded with 180 speakers that fire frequency directly into your body.

This was such an incredible art direction brief, working alongside @nick_vollebak and @sat20100 crafting a piece of clothing as you would craft a piece of graphic design or architecture, how aesthetic is guided by functionality. The delicate and fascinating balance of function over form and vice versa.

To build the Sonic Jacket we worked with FBFX, the London-based special effects studio that has spent 30 years engineering costumes for film and television. They totally smashed this.

To wear the jacket really is a transcendental experience, with varying frequencies triggering different physical and mental reactions. From meditative states to anxiety inducting buzzing.

Such a great project to be involved in from the start to end, thanks Nick Tidball and Darren Roberts at Vollebak.

Process photography captured brilliantly by the talented @mikepalmerphoto always a pleasure.

ROAD CODE.

The frequency illusion, also known as the Baader–Meinhof phenomenon, is a cognitive bias in which a person notices a specific concept, word, or product more frequently after recently becoming aware of it.

I started noticing a code on the pavements and roads everywhere I went. These geometric symbols, squiggles and iconography sprayed onto the streets in brilliant fluorescent colours. It felt like an unknown, mysterious (there is a certain trade that know exactly what they mean!) design system right under our feet. I loved them.

I took them and redrew them, creating a design system that elevated them from hand sprayed tactile information, to clean graphic three dimensional objects.

But they felt like they needed a beautiful, otherworldly base image to sit across. Then I stumbled across the incredible landscape photography of the Alps and the Dolomites by @olivertari perfect imagery, beautifully composed and framed, a far cry from the grimy streets of London!

I felt the urge just to make this. No brief or commission, just a thing. They currently don’t have a home! If anyone needs an album cover, or wants to collaborate by using them somewhere give us a shout.

Cheers Oli for just saying yes to me using the brilliant imagery.

THE BIG FAT BABY

Collaboration by Post. London to Manchester, Manchester to London.

@kdk_12 and I recently finished a year-long collaboration by posting a sketchbook from London to Manchester, and back again.

Working into the book, without rules or any theme, allowed complete freedom and experimentation. We also allowed the other to work over, deface and adapt any piece in the book.

As we progressed, the book got bulkier and heavier, the envelope becoming more interesting and suspicious on each delivery.

A brilliant project, full of humour and surprise.

PROCESS AND CRAFT.

The photography in our zine had a such a great energy and attitude, brilliantly shot by @sambenard and the skating meets also were a mix of community and freedom, we needed an art direction that expressed that. So we brought in the skaters themselves to help us create the typography and textures that then shaped the look and feel of the art direction.

We headed off to the Emirates stadium on a hot summer’s evening, with a giant white canvas, some black ink and a large scale alphabet. We taped it to the ground outside the stadium and encouraged the skaters, with inked-up skates to literally do their thing over the alphabet.

Producing an incredible suite of textures, all real and in action, and a typeface defaced with the inked-up wheels, we then shot that in a studio, digitised it, built all of our headlines then distorted even further on a scanner.

The combination of tactile illustrative marks, reminiscent of expressive performance art, and a typeface that felt kinetic and defaced by wheels, complimented the energy of the photography perfectly.

The cyclical nature of the zine being created by the people that features in it, really captures the community aspect of the roller skating scene, and again represents real collaboration.

New project | LDN ON 8 | out now

Delighted to share LDN ON 8 with you, a new zine that explores the roller skating community and culture taking over all corners of London.

It was my pleasure to work with the supremely talented @sambenard whose photography captures the grit, movement, and texture of the skating scene so perfectly. And it’s always a pleasure to work with my sports culture zine ‘brother-in-arms’ @mrpaulrider whose Art Direction and custom typography wizardry never ceases to amaze.

This zine is the result of months of love, passion, and dedication. And above all collaboration. Collaboration between Sam, Paul, and myself. But also between the skaters who let us into their world and helped shape the custom typography within the zine itself.

LDN ON 8 reflects the raw energy and creativity of London’s roller skating scene. If I say so myself, it’s a work of art.

Footage in this BTS video beautifully captured by @jbgraph.s and expertly edited by @kdk_12 🎬

New collaboration! LDN ON 8

Super proud of this collaboration with Sam Bénard on photography, Dan Parker on editorial, and me on art direction and design.

We made a zine to reflect the raw energy and creativity of London’s roller skating scene. Alongside documenting skating meet-ups and interviewing key members of London’s skating community, we explored ways to embed skating directly into the visual identity.

At the heart of this was the custom typography we made to reflect their flow and movement. We coated our skaters’ wheels in paint and pinned an alphabet canvas to the concrete. One by one, led by Hugo, they skated over the letters – turning our skaters into contributors to the zine’s style as well as its subjects. They left behind imperfect tracks, which reflected the texture and grit of the photography.

We digitised these sheets in a studio so that we could create a suite of bespoke, graphic textures that could be warped and manipulated into a digital typography to echo the skaters’ creative movement. In addition we used the textures and marks created to bring the same energy and freedom to our pages.

The editorial tone throughout the zine is deliberately atmospheric and fragmented, matching the short-burst energy of the skaters while using first-hand quotes to plant the reader in the middle of the sights, sounds, and smells of a typical meet. The making of the zine was documented through film, photography, and drone footage, capturing both the production process and the skating community that shaped it.

From start to finish, the zine encapsulates collaboration. Using the skaters to make marks, textures and our bespoke typeface, through to how Sam, Dan and I worked together to bring this to life. An example of a pure passion project.

Massive thanks to @hugosoul1 @zumbask8withtissy and @thesunskater for being so welcoming and helping us create our zine!

New work! Electric art direction.

The Electromagnetic Shielding Bomber from Vollebak. The outer shell of this jacket is embedded with pure silver that blocks radio waves and microwaves in the frequency range 0.2GHz to 14GHz – which includes WiFi, Bluetooth, Ku-band satellites and radar systems. And it comes with a phone shielding pocket that works like a Faraday cage – blocking access to your devices, regardless of whether they’re switched on or off.

How to visualise the invisible. We used long exposures and physical miniature lights to capture these crazy electromagnetic waves. The neon organic lines contrasting wonderfully with the metallic surface of the material. There’s a timeless craft and triumph in capturing this sort of image in camera.

Big shout to @sunleestudio for elite capturing skills, @izzysteer_ for light wave magic, @nick_vollebak for remote ideas bouncing, @sat20100 for crazy product design skills and @karolina_kula10 for slick retouching.

New work! Where the future meets print.

Art direction and design of the Vollebak Spaceshop launch newspaper.

For the launch of the Spaceshop in London, we made a newspaper. Full of weird and wonderful product stories, epitomising the essence of Vollebak’s experiments in the future in clothing. It was lovely to design a tactile printed object again, tapping into the old magazine days experience (CMYK not RGB!), working alongside the brilliant @nickcompton on word duty.

On the cover and featured are the wonderful alien illustrations created by @delehag

@nick_vollebak the yellow made it!

New work! Psychedelic art direction.

Vollebak partnered with California-based MycoWorks in San Francisco to grow six sheets of the finest mycelium ever cultivated and turned them into a single jacket.

The jacket is based on the A-2 flight jacket, made famous by Steve McQueen in The Great Escape and arguably the most recognisable leather jacket ever made.

This was a brilliant example of imagination and innovation, brought to life by the genius minds of @nick_vollebak and @sat20100

For such a mad project, it needed an equally bonkers art direction, and with a one-word brief from Nick to me, ‘Psychedelic’ we headed to @sunleestudio

Shooting the jacket, real mycelium and an array of crazy mushrooms, we experimented with light, colour and even movement.

Brilliantly shot by @sunleestudio we pushed colour to the maximum. Leaving the studio, the real world looked very black and white in comparison!

Head to vollebak.com to read more about the jacket and the project.
