Some guests arrive with a little mystery.

“Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore.’”

Our Nevermore Raven laydown place cards pair each guest’s name with Poe’s famous visitor in two illustrated scenes: black feathers, a pale skull, deep green foliage, marigold flowers, and antique gold. Sixteen cards—eight of each image—for hosts who prefer their Halloween with a little literature and their darkness served on gold-rimmed china.

For Halloween night, an autumn dinner, or any gathering where every name deserves a beautifully composed place at the table.

Available blank or personalized.

There are only so many times I can post my own mahjong accessories…so I’m sharing some of my favorite things.

First up: these beautiful mahjong place cards from my talented friends Martin and Karen @mrpsplacecards - Choose your font, add your names and they take care of the rest! Or- just leave them blank.

Perfect for post-play dinners or larger mahjong parties. Sally takes forever. Sarah thinks out loud. Strategic seating never hurt. 🩷 by @mrpsplacecards

Of course, there are other backstories to the ELLE Decor shoot that we've never shared before. We tried to create a fire in the fireplace in Pax's bedroom (the second image). I thought it would be as simple as 1, 2, 3. I build fires in the house all through the winter. Well, this was in the summer, and I don't know if you've ever tried to build an indoor fire in the summertime.... it's literally impossible! I don't know what laws of physics govern it, but you can't create enough draft to get the fire going and the smoke up the flue. So guess what? All of the smoke blew back into Pax's bedroom, setting off the deafening smoke alarms!

Karen was out buying lunch For the team from the Old Chatham Country Store.

I had no idea what to do except close the door and open Pax's window to let the smoke out. Literally 3 minutes later, I heard the sound of firetrucks coming down the road. I cannot believe what's happening.

I looked out of the window to see a team of firefighters swarmed around the house.Their sirens blared at full blast. They could see the smoke coming from the window.

Long story short, everything turned out okay, but yet another twist in the ELLE Decor plot!

The lesson: like a well planned dinner party, things go wrong. All. The Time.

Flow, the universe has your back, and in the case of the ED shoot, Frank, though a little smokey, still created his beautiful magic.

Has it been 6 years? When I hark back to the time when ELLE Decor published our home, we were right in the middle of the pandemic and not sure where life was going. Karen and I had just left our 30 year careers in fashion to launch Mr. P; we bet the ranch on the business. Then the pandemic struck. We weren't shipping much during that period because gathering was a bad word---rightly so. Joy was our only compass to navigate these uncertain times.

But the time allowed us a moment to hone where we wanted to take our brand, and we want to thank everyone who found us and supported us during that moment.

My dear friend Sheila Bridges called and said that she had recommended our home to the editors of ELLE Decor. Of course, I pushed back and said, "The house isn't ready." Of course, in Sheila's way, she pushed right back and said, "The house will never be ready. There's always one wall to paint. There's always a missing rug. There's always something that isn't right, ...but you have enough."

No one had been in the house for well over a year: no housekeeper, no one. And on top of it all, above the salon (the terracotta-colored room) is Pax's bathroom. Over the years, when Pax would take a bath, he was flying a spaceship in the bathtub and used the drain lever as a control. We would hear him playing in the bathtub all the time, clanking the drain lever up and down for years. Paid no attention to it.

Pax also had a tendency to fill up the tub as high as he could. Unbeknownst to us, his clanking of the drain lever loosened the seal. When he filled the tub over the lever line, water was back flowing behind the tub and dripping in the salon. Sisal is unforgiving to water.

We had discovered it a few months prior, but of course, we couldn't let anyone in the house to come and repair it.

Charles Curkin, our then editor, said, "Can we come next week?" We almost passed out. Lo and behold it all came together. An amazing team was put around us and they helped to see our house in a way that we hadn't seen it before. taken in Old Chatham, New York by @mrpsplacecards

The ocelot has entered the correspondence drawer—and naturally, it came through Paris.

Several years ago, Martin photographed these markings at Deyrolle, that marvelous cabinet of curiosities on the rue du Bac where nature has always understood the value of a dramatic entrance. Now they run edge to edge across twelve thank-you notes, each clipped at the corners, edged in black, and centered with a gold cartouche bearing 'Merci' in four different typographic moods.

Because gratitude need not whisper. Sometimes it arrives spotted, golden, and very self assured.

L’Ocelot-Merci is Release I of Métier: twelve cards, fourteen white felt envelopes, a signed provenance card, and Mr. P’s signature note-card box. Available blank or personalized on the back with your name or initials.

The chicest thing on the planet.

It has always known its place in a room — a stair runner, a pair of chairs, one silk bolster. We thought it was time it came to the table.

Meet Le Tigre. The pelt runs edge to edge, photographed hair by hair at Deyrolle in Paris by our founder Martin Cooper, then brought to order with clipped corners, a fine black rule, and a gold cartouche for each guest’s name.

Choose from four Métier fonts — each gives the card an entirely different character. Our largest laydown place card lies flat at each setting, no holder needed. And when dinner is over, it is the piece your guest takes home.

Le Tigre is part of Release I of Métier. Available now at mrpsplacecards.com.
