Ryan Davis And The Roadhouse Band (@technique_street) ended up with an unexpected Saturday off in their hometown, so they decided to play a god damn banger of a free show on @thenachbar patio. If you ever wonder why I say the Nachbar is the best bar in this little corner of the multiverse, here is a perfect example of why. Such a beautiful community full of people who are game for whatever comes their way. by @mrseancannon

I saw This Is Lorelei with 250 other people last night in Indy, and something tells me this is the last chance I’ll have to see them in such a small space. So god damn good. by @mrseancannon

This isn’t really a “celebratory” post. It might even be the opposite. I don’t step on a scale often. When I did today, it hit me that I’ve lost exactly 100 pounds in the last 28 months. If I’m being real with you, I don’t quite know how I feel about that. (Gotta scroll the carousel to read the rest…) by @mrseancannon

Grief is a motherfucker…especially if it’s unexpected and complicated. But hey, isn’t it always complicated when it comes to parents? This is one of maybe three of my dad’s possessions that I own. I busted some knuckles while trying to pry it out of my storage unit today.

This sign hasn’t been on since the day he died over a decade ago, so I was pretty shocked when it lit right up. I sat there staring at it for about 20 minutes, unsure what to feel once that initial bit of awe wore off.

Usually waves of grief come and go pretty quickly. Sometimes they make me feel sad. Wistful. Free. Angry. Sometimes like an over-eager 4 year old who just wants to help, but who ruins the chili with too many crackers anyway. Sometimes like a misunderstood 7 year old, asking more questions than any adult can rightfully be expected to answer. Sometimes like a proud 10 year old, whose old man looks just like the god damn Hulkster. Sometimes like a terrified 15 year old standing chest to chest with a person seven inches taller than him, praying that things don’t go further than they already have. Sometimes like a desperate 23 year old, hoping against hope to find a modicum of common ground before he leaves town. Sometimes like a bawling 30 year old who needs one last hug before it’s too late...except it is too late.

And you know, those feelings come no matter what. Regardless of much you’ve processed it. How much time you take sitting with it. Whether you have deep empathy for someone who really was doing the best they knew how after they were dealt a shit hand by the universe. Whether you’ve allowed the child inside to heal and feel safe.

This latest wave of grief crashed hard over the last few weeks for seemingly ridiculous reasons (RIP Frank Beard). It has not receded though, and it’s included all those feelings. So many others too.

I don’t know why I was compelled to dig this sign out today, but I was. I also don’t know what I expected from it. Assurance? Catharsis? Solace? Probably all that and more. Not sure I got any of it though.

All I know is that it’s still on, two hours later. Maybe that little bit of surprise is enough. by @mrseancannon

Back in my public radio days, whenever culturally disengaged family members asked what I did for a living, the quick and easy answer was “I interview famous people.” They’d ask for names. I’d list off a bunch of musicians, actors, directors, authors, and comedians…then be met with blank stares. It wasn’t until I interviewed Weird Al about seven years ago that they finally believed I wasn’t lying to them. I hadn’t seen him perform in 15 years though. The live show definitely held up! taken in KFC Yum! Center by @mrseancannon
