How do you get an agent? 🎨What if I’m a high school artist who can’t afford to go to Art school? 🤔What’s going on “behind the curtain“ at Mark‘s house? I had a great time chatting and drawing with my new friend AG Ford @agfordart He was an amazing amount of brilliant statements and life lessons. If you want to get your act together and be a better artist take time to listen to this one and jot down notes. Then my wife @MrsHoffy joined us to share a brand new SUPERSIZED 📚Lauren list: Sensitive Topic picture books (link in B|0 to all of Lauren’s Lists on Bookshop.org): 📓NOT MY IDEA by @ahigginbooks 📕A PLACE FOR US by @jransomillustr 📓A DAY WITH NO WORDS by @fidgets.and.fries and @k8cosgrove 📓KNOCK KNOCK by @danielbeatyverified and @bryancollier28 📗HOW TO GROW A FAMILY TREE by @beabirdsong and @jasuhuart 📕ME AND MY FEAR by @frencisan 📔WHERE ARE YOU, BRONTË? 🍂🍁Did you play in the fallen leaves as a kid? I used to jump in the pile when they were all raked up. We don’t rake them now as it’s better for critters over the winter to leave them where they are. I made this piece when I had #kidlit superstar Kyle Beckett on my Insta live show, Gab ‘n’ Doodle. Join me TODAY at 1pm ET, when I’ll have on the amazing A.G. 🎨What should you focus on if you want to become a #kidlit illustrator? 🦄Where can you find a unicorn zombie? 🖐️Why are your fingers blue?! I had a great time getting to know my new friend Marta Altés @martaltes We chatted about so many things but I will never forget our stained hands that show we know what we are doing! 🎃 Happy October, and happy 4th birthday to these two little goobers, Little Miss May O.Nays and Chicken Noodle Corndog, aka @mayoandnoodle ❓Do you dress your dogs (or even cats) up for Halloween? Take the poll 👇 I have plans for them but I’m not sure if I’ll get them done in time. I also need to work on their monthly costumes for November, which are labor intensive! #CuteDogs #DogsInCostumes #DogCostumes #DogHalloweenCostumes #DogGhostbusters taken in Biltmore Hotel by @mrshoffy

🎨What’s a good way to incorporate your illustration influences into your personal style? 🏎️How do you make DeLorean money doing #kidlit? 🖍️If you went back to preschool now, would you rule the school? I had a stellar evening talking with my new friend Marissa Valdez @marissaarts She was a trooper to take time away from two newborns to draw and chat with me and she did a fabulous job at that. Make sure to spend some time reading her books. Part 2 of my lovely chat with the super talented #kidlit agent Erica Rand Silverman. @ericarsilverman During our session Erica drew some tributes to some of her represented illustrators, including @xfang_studio @X Fang, Mika Dong, @areyouokfai @acaseoflala @jasharawan @robinrosenthal @derekdesierto …and more. At the end @mrshoffy shares her Lauren’s List: Picture Book Biographies (below) As we made art, we chatted about: •  when she thinks the #kidlit industry will bounce back •  the types of picture books that publishers are looking for •  how do I know what trends are coming up? •  what is meta data in publishing? •  timing is everything in this industry! •  what should a kidlit author/illustrator provide to their agent to give a book the best chance possible? •  how much variety to have in your portfolio, while showing your unique voice •  her beloved dog, Snickers and my dogs @MayoAndNoodle •  her typical workday •  working with contracts in the children’s book industry •  what support should authors/illustrators expect from their agents beyond the deals •  …and so much more!
