From a scouting perspective, Steve Slaton was an explosive, highly productive running back at @WVUfootball who consistently showed burst, vision, acceleration, lateral quickness, one-cut ability and home-run speed in @realcoachrod spread, zone-based offense

Slaton finished his WVU career with 3,923 rushing yards and 50 rushing touchdowns, while adding 65 receptions for 805 yards and five receiving touchdowns. In 2006, he rushed for 1,744 yards and 16 touchdowns at 7.0 yards per carry, while adding 360 receiving yards and two scores

On film, Slaton was at his best when he could press the line of scrimmage, read leverage, make one decisive cut and immediately accelerate vertically. He had the quickness to redirect without losing much speed and the explosiveness to punish poor pursuit angles once he reached the second level. His ability to contribute as a receiver also gave him added value in space

The @HoustonTexans selected Slaton 89th overall in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft, and his traits translated immediately. As a rookie, he rushed for 1,282 yards and nine touchdowns, caught 50 passes for 377 yards and another touchdown, and finished with 1,659 yards from scrimmage and 10 total touchdowns

Slaton’s college production was backed by legitimate NFL traits: vision, burst, acceleration, change of direction, receiving ability and explosive-play speed. Houston’s zone-based run game allowed him to play fast, attack space and immediately translate those strengths to the NFL by @mrslaton

Steve Slaton was an absolute NIGHTMARE for college defenses. 😤🔥

Before injuries and a short NFL career changed the trajectory, Slaton was one of the most explosive running backs in college football.

At West Virginia, he burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman in 2005, rushing for 1,128 yards and 17 touchdowns while averaging an absurd 7.8 yards per carry.

Then came 2006.

Slaton ran for 1,744 yards and 16 touchdowns, averaging 7.8 yards per carry again, while helping lead West Virginia to a 10-2 record and a Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia.

And he wasn’t done.

In 2007, he followed it up with 1,051 rushing yards and 17 total touchdowns, giving him more than 3,900 all-purpose yards and 50 total touchdowns over his three seasons in Morgantown.

He had the burst, the acceleration and the big-play ability to turn a routine handoff into a 60-yard touchdown in the blink of an eye.

Steve Slaton was one of the most electric backs of the mid-2000s.
