My mentor once told me: “Never look a gift horse in the mouth.”

At first, I had no clue what that meant. But over time, I realized it’s about gratitude and practicality.

The original phrase comes from checking a horse’s teeth to see its value. If someone gives you one, you don’t inspect it, you accept it. In business, my mentor reframed it: when you’re starting out, don’t turn away opportunities just because they aren’t glamorous. Take the work that pays, because in the beginning cash flow is king.

That’s why I’m starting a series called My Mentor Once Told Me. Lessons passed down that shaped how I think, work, and lead. This is the first one.

Crazy right!?

An identity shift hit me hard in the face over the last few weeks. I try to feel things and think like the old Storm but I can’t. It’s like I’ve been hypnotised or something.

And here I am putting my all into every minute of everyday. Something I’ve always been afraid of. Who am I when I’m just aggressively annoying at chasing down the best me.

Here he is. Look at that smile. Howzit boet! 😂😏😌🤝🏻 by @mrstormblight

I spent a lot of time looking for the missing piece.

Better systems. Better strategy. Better positioning.

But the thing that felt “missing” was staring at me the whole time.

It was me.

Not the version trying to sound smarter.
Not the version trying to fit into someone else’s mold.

Just me doing the work the way I do it.

Turns out that was the ingredient all along.

I’ve been craving this recently.

Working in the online space has its perks, but it also has a big list of cons if you don’t manage it correctly. Especially when you’re absolutely obsessed with your work. When the culture is addictive and pushes your boundries. When being A+ player and all your care about is what you do when you’re at your computer.

Now, of course the harmony factor is completely missing here and it’s been missing because I’ve payed zero mind to it.

In late Nov 2024 I stated getting out of the house more and shaking hands with some incredible people in the space and those not in the space.

Incredibly refreshing perspectives you get when being around people sitting across from you without a screen between you.

I actually played some sport and had lunch with @tom__youngs . I had dinner with @yannickgreeff , lunch with @georgebrocklehurst , ol mate @jackrobs0n I met through Luis and so on. Then did a pod with @androokoen & @quintonweberr.

Recently I met the boys from TNS in person and I’ve decided to focus on building a local offer in SA.

Being indoors and locked in was cool, but today I crave people, relationships and doing deals where you can high five or fist bump instead of putting the party emoji on zoom. lol.

So if you’re based in Cape Town and want to connect. DM me and we’ll set something up 🤝🏻 by @mrstormblight
