I hadn't posted for so long I genuinely forgot what button to press! It was just an "+" the last time I think. Managed it anyway - so here is a video I made that shows what you can do if your paint isn't as smooth as you'd like. People add texture paste to their paint, but what if the paint already is textured but you want to subtract it? I did this with a tube of Wallace Seymour's cinnabar (the cerreto piano cinnabar they make exclusively for the Supreme Paint Company). The sound was a real surprise, and how the paint got quieter the smaller the grains got. by @mrwilliambennett

More selfing about with charcoal and chalk, 2024 until April 2025.

Title is something like, "My future, my present, my past" because the mirror is in front of me, but shows me where I am, and also what's behind me.

I felt like I'd been kidnapped after 15 minutes, so I stopped. by @mrwilliambennett

Learning to social-mediate and draw at the same time. Some self portraits from 2024 with captions:

I only had a small mirror and I didn't have anything to hold it except a cardboard box resting on the curtains, so my position was a bit samey.

By an amazing coincidence, I then saw an oval mirror with a frame in a charity shop for £3! Maybe now I can actually draw below my neck?

In one, I'm listening to the last few chapters of Planet of the Apes audiobook, and I also tried using a paper stump.

I won't put the back story in how the hat got on my head, but when saw it in the mirror, I liked the jaunty brim and angle. Reminded me of a Bill Martin.

I liked the angles the hat made a lot, more fun than the bobble hat I had on in January. Drew it without my glasses on as well.

In March I drew the coquettish Orson Wells one.

In April I was still trying to get the hat right. Either too tall or not wide enough. Why is that, hat?

The label says not to get the hat wet as its made out of paper.

In April, again with a crumpled hat and crumpled face, I drew one with a carpenters pencil. In July I thought pastels were a bit silly

I saw a bottle of ink in a charity shop that was more like paint than ink. Drew those with Bristol brushes (bristle brushes).

Ink and collage, and somehow, a likeness; then back to vine charcoal in September after I saw a Kathe Kollwitz.

One of them only took 20 minutes, but then another one took three hours over three nights in November. I also tried drawing with a chamois leather dipped in charcoal powder.

On the first day of Christmas my charcoal gave to me - a portrait of a fair me. by @mrwilliambennett
