Throwback to being discovered and invited by Rick Rubin to his home in Malibu, conversations about purpose in his garden looking out to the Pacific ocean and giving him a Sarangi lesson! The legend could have written a whole memoir on his history-making career and his work with legends in their own right. But no. He has written a book on creativity. The guy is so humble…even his email address doesn’t have his name in it!!!

It’s World Children’s Day. Here’s me and @skipmarley singing his song Refugee on the UN stage on this day in 2019. Today, I reflect on what the UN/UNICEF, human rights laws and art even mean. If artists are losing gigs (from experience), exhibitions of known activist-artists are being put on hold - what does being an artist even mean? I’ve always said the greatest music we still celebrate is PROTEST music. Bob Marley, Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Gil Scott Heron, Public Enemy…the list goes on…why are artists still so afraid to speak out?

In a word where the UK govt can just block the Human Rights Act, children are being martyred in their thousands, children are still striking for climate action, the word ‘decolonisation’ could get you suspended on an online platform…we artists have some serious deep work to do. Why are we artists? We are inherently political. By profession. By history. By being children of immigrants. By living in world still governed by archaic systems. We are political. by @ms.amritkaur

Would love to see you soon x

Backstage @gorillaz show, in my hometown Tottenham(!!) we basked in musicianship. I learnt so much by just being present. @anoushkashankarofficial and @ashaputhli and Asha Bosle's daughter @zanaibhosle were true goddesses up there on a stadium stage showing us what women in South Asian music can do!!! I had a smile on my face the whole time and then seeing some of my favourite live performance artists from stage side (Kano & Little Simz) was JOYYYYYY!!
