Happy Birthday Pookie 💔
I had hoped we’d be at another game night planning that weird Haunted House game I never understood. I was hoping we’d could dance til 2AM & go ride scooters around the lake. I was hoping you would see me and yell COUSIIIIIIIN! I was praying I could see you again. Just to say I love you & that death will never be enough reason to forget the life you lived so damn well. I love you.

Here is an excerpt of the last poem I wrote him and read to him. I’m so blessed he knew that I love him deeply.

From Skyscraper Riot
In honor of Dewight Dwane Johnson III

It would be a summer day rising
In some rundown part of the early 2000’s

& I would be giddy & gullible
All skin & wide teeth

When my big cousin –
My always-run-to-me human

Would convince me to climb
A metal fence across the way

From his mother’s lath & plaster apartments
& the mischief in my molars grinned

At the possibility of being weightless
Made of a ragged childhood & lady taffy humor

We climb effortlessly
Let memory tell it

Two Black children escaping
The unspoken rules of surviving in bodies like ours

We raced to the top of our new lives
Feet dangling like falling from a skyscraper, but I am

A giant atop foreclosed homes & boarded-up windows
& a light indimable even if only for a moment

“‘An Internal Invite to the Cookout’ is a poem that honors the reality of the history of Richmond, CA with redlining, environmental injustice and racism. This poem highlights the devastating similarities that North Richmond holds with Palestine. This is an ode to the activists on the ground fighting for the sanctity of our homes.” – CieraJevae

In Fall 2023, an intergenerational cohort of twenty Bay Area poets gathered for a six week writing workshop intensive led by the Ecology Center’s (@ecology.center) inaugural poet in residence, Gabriel Cortez (@gabrielmcortez), to create new original poems uplifting environmental justice, food sovereignty, land sovereignty, and local lineages of resistance. Select poems were toured throughout Berkeley schools, farmers markets, book fairs, and more. A handful of poems by CieraJevae (@ms.missing_my_bed), Erzsabet Gonzalez (@erzsa.g), Maya Zeff (@eco.poetry), Zara Jamshed (@zeejamz) were turned into short films to be shared online.

I don’t know that this will ever feel real to me. If you know me, then you’ve probably been around this lovable soul. My cousin means the world to me. He was my confidant, my run-to-me human, my emergency contact. Life will never be even close to the same without his laugh, our long conversations, and all the ways he kept me afloat. I love you with everything left in me.

Please join us as we honor his life and walk to save others who are struggling. 9/19/26 at 9am! Link in my bio.
