One of the most recognisable houses of the 20th Century the significance of the Farnsworth House was appreciated well before it was even built with the exhibition of a model of the house at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York in 1947.

Initially conceived in 1945 as a country retreat for Dr. Edith Farnsworth, the surrounding landscape plays an integral role in Mies van der Rohe’s design: walls of glass seek to dissolve the barrier between inside and out while thin, white I-beam supports form a stark contrast to the dark trunks of the surrounding trees.

Farnsworth House was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 2004, the same year it opened to the public, and was designated a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 2006 taken in Edith Farnsworth House by @ms.modernism

Dedicated to modern art, the museum’s iconic glass pavilion stands as a defining landmark of 20th-century modern architecture. It underwent a major refurbishment by David Chipperfield Architects, completed in 2021.

Kaufmann Office | 1935-1937 | Frank Lloyd Wright | Originally Pittsburgh now V&A East, London

Designed for Edgar J. Kaufmann, the owner of Fallingwater, the office was originally installed in his Pittsburgh department store.

Kaufmann donated the entire office to the V&A in 1974, after relocating his store.

After being in storage for many years, the office has been meticulously restored and is now on permanent view at the new, extraordinary V&A East Storehouse, London. It is considered one of the most important 20th-century objects in the V&A’s collection.
