The Meaning Behind My Puppy’s Name - “Doku”

Many people ask me why my puppy is named Doku, so today I want to share something very personal.

Back in 2017, my family and I had a tiny black-n-white puppy named Doku. We all loved him so much- he was my dad’s absolute favourite. He was the one who woke me up from bed every morning. He was mischievous, chubby, and full of attitude. He used to annoy my mom on purpose and never listened to her whenever my dad was around, because he knew Dad would always protect him.

He brought so much life into our home… until the day we lost him in a sudden accident at just 2 months old.

When he died, our home went silent. Everyone was crying. I was the only one beside him in his final moment- the last thing he did was look into my eyes before he closed his forever. I remember breaking down; then when my mom and sister returned home, they cried too and called my dad. Even my dad couldn’t hold back the tears. That’s how important Doku was to all of us.

My dad tearfully dug a small grave beside our house and laid him to rest. I will never forget the emptiness that filled our home after that.

Since then, I’ve seen many puppies online with similar colours… but none of them felt like him.

Then one day, I saw a puppy named Slip on Kijiji. When I saw him, something inside me just knew. He reminded me so much of the love I lost - not exactly the same, but enough to touch a very deep place in my heart. And he came into my life at the same age my first Doku left us.

My angel Doku in heaven must have whispered, “Give her another little chaos ball to love.”
This new Doku came with the same mixed-breed charm, mischief in his eyes, cuteness, audacity and sweetness in his heart. I didn’t even pretend to resist- I brought him home instantly.

I named him Doku not to replace the one I lost, but to honour him.

My Doku now is 6 months old. Watching him grow feels like a second chance… like I get to imagine how my Doku in heaven might have grown if life had given him more time.

He is my reminder that love never disappears - sometimes it returns to us in a new form. ❤️🐾 by @ms.pynadath
