As Notthing Hill Carnival weekend approaches, thinking back to when Dr Gus Casely-Hayford OBE, Director of V&A East, officially opened Zak Ové’s ‘Jumbie Jubilation’ in 2024. @nhcarnivalldn contributes an estimated £345–£396 million to London’s economy annually and supports around 3,000 full-time-equivalent jobs. Around one million working hours go into producing it. These figures highlight how it supports local enterprise and generates opportunities through the skills, labour and collaboration of the communities who make it happen. It is not simply a weekend event; it is a year-long system of cultural value creation. Mariana Mazzucato and artist @alvarobarrington Carnival Economics research examines this wider value, including creative skills, local enterprise, identity, heritage and social cohesion. Its economic contribution is inseparable from its cultural and social impact. This raises questions about the wider contribution of festivals and public art trails—something we are thinking about at @kcawlondon and Art Trail as we prepare for our 10th edition in 2027 and our celebratory 10 year anniversary book publication. The public consultation, curation and delivery of this first permanent public artwork celebrating Carnival in the area was led by Vestalia Chilton @ms_chilton_v. #NottingHillCarnival #CarnivalEconomics #CulturalValue #PublicArt JumbieJubilation @saatchi_gallery @kensingtonandchelseacouncil @rubyhotels @Frogmore @carojennings @highstreet_Kensington by @ms_chilton_v
A brief glimpse of our Academy of Urbanism assessment visit to Groningen, a 2026 finalist for European City of the Year. My main takeaway from Groningen was the concept of a “healthy, happy and poor” city. When I asked what this meant, the planners explained that public spaces must be accessible to everyone, regardless of income, age or background. This is central to their agenda for Groningen to be ‘a liveable’ city. When visiting the Martinikerk (church) it was the Egbert Modderman’s ‘Quenching the Thirsty’ depicting the Good Samaritan giving water and care to an injured stranger (first image) that stood out. In a beautiful moment, sunlight from the church windows fell across the painting, somehow it felt that this work of mercy might be reflecting the vision of a compassionate, inclusive and liveable city. #UrbanismAwards #Groningen #AcademyOfUrbanism #Urbanism #CityMaking by @ms_chilton_v
What a week. 💙 Kensington + Chelsea Art Week 2026 has come to a close, and we’re feeling incredibly grateful to everyone who made this year’s festival so special. Together, we welcomed 4,300+ visitors to Kindred Studios, celebrated the work of 400 artists, brought our sold-out Art Bus Tour to life, explored 10 Art Trail locations, hosted four guided tours, enjoyed performances from 20 incredible performers, and welcomed the Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea to celebrate the creativity thriving across the borough. But the numbers only tell part of the story. What we’ll remember most are the conversations sparked, the new connections formed, and the joy of seeing our communities come together through art. To every artist, volunteer, performer, partner and visitor—thank you. Your energy, creativity and generosity are what make Kensington + Chelsea Art Week so special. Special thanks to Kindred Studios (@kindredstudiosartists), The Gallery Association (@tga_artbus), Morley College London (@morley_college), Peter Morris (@petermorrisarchitects), Annie Trevorah (@annietrevorahsculptor), Maya Sanbar (@mayasanbar), Muse Gallery (@muse_at_269), Portobello Radio (@portobello.radio), Chelsea Theatre (@chelseatheatreworldsend), Notting Dale Campus (@nottingdalecampus), Saira Jamiesom (@sairajamieson), Junior Tomlin (@juniortomlin), and our principal sponsor, The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (@rbkculture), whose generosity, creativity and collaboration made this year’s festival possible. The wait is over... Kensington + Chelsea Art Week 2026 has officially begun. Yesterday we gathered with artists, students, partners, volunteers and our local community on Freston Road to unveil More Joyful Cities – a vibrant new public mural by Peter Morris, created in collaboration with students from Morley College London. We were honoured to welcome the Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea, who joined us to celebrate the opening of this year’s festival and the extraordinary creativity that thrives across the borough. Inspired by our 2026 theme, Web of Life, the mural celebrates the power of creativity to connect people, transform places and strengthen communities. A special thank you to Notting Dale Campus for providing the hoarding that made this ambitious artwork possible, and to the many KCAW volunteers whose dedication helped bring the project to life. A huge thank you to Junior Tomlin for his leaflet designs and Morley College for their T-shirt designs! This year’s Serpentine Pavilion (@serpentineuk), a serpentine, reimagines the historic English serpentine wall as a space for gathering, encounter, and connection. Designed by Mexico City-based architects Isabel Abascal and Alessandro Arienzo of LANZA atelier (@lanzaatelier), the Pavilion uses brick as its primary material, creating a structure that feels both familiar and entirely new. Set within Kensington Gardens, the Pavilion is free to visit and offers a chance to experience architecture as a place for conversation, reflection, and community. 📍 Serpentine South, Kensington Gardens 📅 6 June – 25 October 2026 🎟 Free admission Have you visited yet? #KCAW #KensingtonAndChelseaArtWeek #SerpentinePavilion #WhatsOnKensington #KensingtonGardens by @ms_chilton_v
This June, Kensington + Chelsea Art Week returns with Web of Life, a programme of public art, installations and events exploring the connections between people, place and the natural world. One of this year’s headline commissions, Tree Island: Rooted in Kensington by Toy Studio and MAMIMU, reimagines Kensington through the lens of biodiversity, belonging and the hidden networks that sustain urban life. Featuring planting led by Mandy Lee and connected to Pollinator Pathmaker, the installation creates a space for gathering, reflection and coexistence between people and pollinators. Rooted in Kensington serves as the central landmark of a borough-wide art trail taking place from 20 June to 20 July 2026, guiding visitors through a programme of public art across Kensington and Chelsea.
