After making a few of Elizabeth Zimmermann's Baby Surprise Jackets for my friends' kids, I decided I needed a grown up version for myself.

This is very definitely a jacket - it's thick enough that it's going to get worn in place of a coat. I'm particularly proud of the afterthought pockets that I cut into the finished piece. Truthfully, I had intended it to be more cropped but, because of how the pattern works, it wouldn't have been as big in the bust and I like how oversized it is.

It's loud, it's an important pattern in knitting history and it's ready for a Scottish winter. It couldn't be more me if I tried.

Feeling a little emotional today. I made this blanket in 2022 for my friend's new baby. It came out a lot bigger than I intended, too big to use for a baby.

Today, that baby is a toddler. Their mum just let me know they're curled up under it having a nap because they feel under the weather and I'm tearing up.

This is exactly what you hope when you make a blanket like this. You want it to be something that makes them feel better better and they go to for comfort. So I'm gunna go curl up under my blanket and try not to get to choked up.

Now the wedding is over, I can share the pictures of the shawl I made for @lucy__bloom.

When she told me the wedding vibes, I knew I had the perfect pattern: from the 1970s publication Golden Hands. If I never make any more fringing, it will be too soon but it's so her I was happy to persevere through it.

After talking about the landmark Baby Surprise Jacket by Elizabeth Zimmermann in my research, I decided it was probably a good idea to actually make one. After that first one went off to its new home, I'd kind of got the bug for it and decided to make a toddler version for my pal's 4 year old.

The beautiful thing about Zimmermann's approach is that she wants you to tweak, she wants you to modify, she wants you to experiment. And in the internet age there are lots of people who will tell you about their own changes. So I read through a bunch and made this one. It's got longer sleeves, a longer body and a cute seed stitch collar.

Honestly, I think it might be the cutest piece of kid's clothing I've made yet. It's big on the 4yr old and the BSJ is notoriously stretchy... so much so that her mum decided to try it on. 😅

I am going to do utterly depraved things to this book (like underline passages and write in the margins).

Picked up my preorder copy of 'Unsuitable:A History of Lesbian Fashion' by @dressingdykes from my local queer bookshop, @categoryisbooks. So so so excited to read this.

For anyone who attended (or missed) the 'Women's Countercultural Creativity' event this week, I thought I'd shout out some of the artists and researchers I mentioned here. It was a really great conversation between @adele.patrick and I for @royalsoced and @womenslibrary. Links to the further reading list and Spare Rib jumper blog posts can be found in my bio.

The Arthur meme - which condenses a lot of Rozika Parker's work into one fantastic image - is the work of @hanecdote.

Research into craft in Spare Rib was done by @knitrospective and published in mai_feminism.

When I talked about jumpers at Greenham Common, I probably gushed a lot about the work of ellenlesperance but that's bc I love it. (@mhari_mcmullan has written a great article on it as well, go read it.)

Sadly, Rita McGurn is no longer with us but her daughter @francelisemcg incorporated her mother's work into her own show last year and continues to be a great advocate for her work.

Visible mending is something I do myself which is one of the reasons I wanted to include the work of @celiapym - the wall of bags at the Arnolfini was just great.

Two women I highlighted who have made tangible impacts on knitting are Elizabeth Zimmerman and Betty Lindsey. But it's the researchers on their work who make it possible for me to include them. The expert on Elizabeth Zimmerman is @lillymarsh and @norahowley has been doing fantastic work on Betty Lindsey and Shetland 2000.

The two artists I highlighted who are responding to lesbian history are @sarahjoy.ford, whose work on the Ladies of Llangollen was installed at @plasnewyddllan, and @lydiasarty whose work responds to the GWL archive.

Thank you to everyone who attended, either in person or online. It was a lot of fun to put together and to connect all the threads (pun intended) of different textile work. by @ms_joat

Highlights from my first two rolls of film on my (new to me) Nikon F-601.

Unsurprisingly, most of the pics are unusable. But these have been about getting comfortable with the differences between shooting with an SLR and a DSLR. The ones that have come out well I'm pretty happy with.
