What would an 81-year-old Cosmic Joe be like? It’s hard not knowing... but I’m certain he’d still be wearing cut-up T-shirts and leg warmers, loving coffee and chocolate ice cream, writing on his arms with a thick black Sharpie (because why not?), creating music and waiting for his first record deal. Received our 2026 health insurance renewal this morning. The monthly premium is a 18.54% increase from last year and officially our highest monthly expense, coming in at $2,606, $400 MORE than our monthly mortgage payment. The monthly premium doesn’t include the $11,000 max out-of-pocket we have to meet before our insurance kicks in. That’s a grand total of $42, 272 a year for two adults and a 22 year old. Yesterday, my former stepmother wrote a lengthy post on Facebook, describing in detail several situations involving my dad. She and my dad divorced more than 40 years ago, and my dad passed away 25 years ago so I’m not sure why now was the right time to air her grievances, but to each their own. I commented on her post because several statements she made I know to be false, and as my father’s daughter, I felt the need to defend him and honor his dear partner who took care of him while he was dying a terrible death from untreated cancer. As expected, she was not happy with my rebuttal and sent me a long Facebook message this morning. Her first sentence said, “Who are you? You are not the woman I thought you to be.” and ended her lengthy note with “Please grow up.”

While I don’t care what she thinks about me, her words caused me to think about the woman I am... I work hard to grow (up?) every day. Constantly processing trauma, finding joy and lessons in every day, loving my trans daughter with every ounce of my being while she navigates a country where some people hate her, working hard to be a better community member, small business owner, friend, mom, and partner. All of which I do with empathy. I often think of my dad looking down on me, Chris, Dalton, and Claire, and being oh so proud of who we are. I know for sure that I am the woman my dad hoped I would be ❤️ by @ms_schell
