I was 15 years old the first time I ever picked up a camera. It was the same feeling of euphoria and excitement that I would feel every time I picked up a basketball; up until then I never thought I’d feel that way about anything else. But unfortunately at that time, feelings of self-doubt and insecurity eventually overcame and prevented me from pursuing photography and videography past high school.

As grateful as I am that cameras found their way back into my hands, I still fight those feelings of insecurity every day as a 31-year old man. But these days I try and make more room for those inner child feelings of euphoria and excitement, and combine them with patience, curiosity, and a growth mindset. It’s never perfect, and some days are harder than others, but it’s better than letting insecurity win.

In short, with whatever you do or pursue, the only thing truly stopping you, is yourself.

On our one year anniversary in San Diego last weekend, as we walked through Balboa Park we stumbled upon @mcwhitneys_poetry who was offering flash poetry written on a typewriter. Being literature nerds, we felt compelled to approach him.

Not only was Nathan a pleasure to talk to, but he really took the time to listen and get to know us before proceeding to write this beautiful poem. He had this calm, measured presence that made connecting with him naturally easy. He even referenced aspects of our lives within the poem that we didn’t tell him. I think that innate ability is the essence of a true artist.

1 year married to you ❤️ the fastest, yet most memorable year of my life.

From the most perfect wedding I could’ve ever imagined, to just recently moving into our new apartment together, to all of the adventures, celebrations, laughs, and even difficult times in between, I’d never want to experience any of it without you.

My camera has taken me some cool places, but this might be the coolest yet.

As the World Cup ends with its final game today and I reflect on this experience, gratitude is what I keep coming back to. Even though I don’t shoot sports much, it was my first true passion in life. Being immersed in this atmosphere, witnessing the pride that fans had in cheering on their respective countries: it brought me back to the joy it used to give me playing soccer and basketball growing up as a kid. Anytime you can revive those emotions and memories as an adult is worth being grateful for.

Thank you to @pablocalvache.photo for giving me this opportunity; your passion for photography, soccer, and life is contagious. Working with you and Alessia on this project was nothing but a pleasure
