Introducing ‘Sustainable Seafood Specials’, the series where we explore the local speciality dishes on offer at sustainable fish and chip shops - and we're kicking off at @therealfoodcafe in Tyndrum, on the way to the Scottish Highlands.

Fresh from winning the Environment and Sustainable Business Award at this year’s @nfff_uk National Fish and Chip Awards, The Real Food Café shows that sustainability and incredible food go hand in hand. As well as their tasty fish and chips, here are the other sustainable seafood dishes on their menu:

SPICY FISH NUGGETS A hidden gem on the menu. Crispy MSC certified sustainable haddock nuggets with a kick, served with chips and sweet chilli sauce. Over 1,600 portions were sold last year, and customers who discover them rarely look back - they often become their new go-to meal. A flavourful option for hikers and mountain bikers tackling the West Highland Way, plus they're part of a zero-waste recipe that helps reduce fish wastage.

HOMEMADE FISH CAKES Handcrafted fish cakes made with MSC certified sustainable haddock, served with tartare sauce and chips. The fish was added back to the menu in March 2024 after customers at this Highland café asked for their return. Perfect comfort food after exploring the trails around Tyndrum and Ben More.

Whether you're hiking in Scotland, mountain biking through Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, or exploring the Scottish Highlands, there's delicious sustainable seafood for everyone at this award-winning sustainable fish and chip shop.

We'll be showcasing more unique dishes from MSC certified sustainable fish and chip shops across the UK and Ireland soon - follow along for more Sustainable Seafood Specials! 💙

Meet Francis. 🦀

Francis has spent his whole life fishing in the waters around Shetland, working alongside his brothers Norman and Raymond, and his nephew Calum. Together, they head out on the waters as part of the MSC certified Shetland brown crab fishery.

Francis and his crew set out creels - baited traps into the cold, clear Shetland waters. When they haul them up, each crab is carefully measured. Those under 140mm, the juveniles, are returned to the sea. 🎣

"It all goes back live to catch another day!" he says.

But fishing here is tough. The exposed west side of Shetland is wild, facing the Atlantic's rough seas, fierce winds, and long, dark winters when the boats stay docked.

"No two years are the same," says Francis, who keeps a diary to capture the unpredictable rhythm of this trade.

Back on shore, his connection to the sea continues. He enjoys his crab pickled with biscuits or mashed into hearty crab cakes. For him, the taste of fresh crab is the taste of home.

As a certified sustainable fisherman, Francis takes pride in protecting crab stocks and safeguarding the wider ocean environment in Shetland. For him, it's all about respecting the sea that has given his family a way of life. 🌊

We're celebrating the recertification of the SSMO Shetland Brown Crab fishery. Check out more about the fishery: link in bio!

For the first time ever, tuna has overtaken cod as the UK's top-selling MSC certified wild-caught fish with 1 in 2 tins on supermarket shelves now carrying the blue MSC ecolabel. Five years ago, it was fewer than 1 in 5.

In just five years, certified sustainable tuna has gone from hard to find, to hard to miss. 🌊

Next time you’re with us, look out for the little blue tick on our menu.

It marks the dishes made with MSC certified seafood. That means the fish comes from a fishery independently assessed against the Marine Stewardship Council’s science-based standard for sustainable fishing, and it can be traced all the way back to the boat that caught it.

We put it on our menus because you deserve to know exactly what you’re ordering. And once you know to look for it, choosing the blue tick (at Rockfish, at the fish counter, or anywhere) is one of the simplest things you can do to back sustainable fishing.

All four of these dishes carry it.

Stocking up on a few essentials ahead of the big game this weekend? We've got a small team of sustainable seafood snacks on the substitutes bench - all of which can be eaten on toast for a quick bite. ⚽

1. @Sainsbury's Dill & Pickle Tinned Tuna – for the pickle fans. Straight onto toast, a toastie or into a dip - tasty and easy.
2. @johnwestuk Kippers in Tomato Sauce – stir through a pasta sauce or simply pop under the grill for an omega-3 top-up before extra time.
3. @tesco Cantabrian Anchovies – scatter over pizza, whisk into a dressing, or stick on top of a toastie for a tasty addition!

Whether you're getting a big shop in early or popping out last minute, look for the blue MSC ecolabel for a sustainable seafood snack that's ready whenever hunger (or extra time) strikes.

You might have spotted these on your table in our restaurants!

That little blue fish label means more than most people realise. It’s the mark of the Marine Stewardship Council (@mscintheuk), the independent body that sets the global, science-based standard for sustainable wild-capture fishing. To carry it, a fishery has to pass rigorous third-party assessment, and the seafood has to be traceable from the ocean to your plate.

The independence part is a really key point (we don’t think you should mark your own homework when it comes to sustainable fishing!) Anyone can say their fish is “sustainable”, but independent certification is how you prove it. The label is also something you (as a consumer with a conscience!) might look out for, so it’s why we have it on our menus.

Everything on our menu comes from local boats, MSC certified fisheries, or fisheries with improvement plans (FIPs) in place, working towards certification.

Mitch - our founder - is also proud to be an MSC ambassador, championing the sustainable fishing he’s backed since day one. by @mscintheuk

What does sustainable fishing actually look like in practice?

Our new film all about herring shows the real measures, made by real people, out at sea who are protecting fish stocks for future generations.

Four countries are working under one fishery certificate to ensure that herring is fished at sustainable levels: from following scientific advice on quotas, to bycatch reduction.

For many families from fishing communities across the North Sea, herring isn’t just a fish – it’s also a way of life that’s been handed down through generations. 🐟

Sustainable fishing practices mean that family livelihoods across fish producers in Scotland, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands can be sustained for generations to come.

Did you know that in the North Sea, four countries are working together to ensure the future of herring?

Herring is a vitally important fish species – and in the North Sea, fish producers from Scotland, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands work under one fishery certificate – sharing information, learning from one another and working together to implement sustainable fishing practices.
