Have I ever mentioned how much I love playgrounds? Because I LOVE playgrounds. I’ve been obsessed with them even before having kids, especially the really well-designed ones.

I’m fascinated by how playgrounds interact with their surroundings. Whether they’re tucked into urban neighborhoods, integrated into natural landscapes, or designed to bring communities together. I love thinking about who they’re built for and how they help kids and families connect and play.

A new playground opened near us this summer, and I am completely obsessed. It has multiple access points, play areas for all ages, a sand pit, a zip line, a splash pad… you name it. It’s set in a park with tons of space to picnic or grill, and it’s right next to a big parking lot, which is always a bonus.

10/10 would recommend. Can’t wait to visit again!

Thank goodness for art.
I have only had an art show in my classroom once before, and it fills my cup so much to be bringing it back this year.

When the world feels heavy and hard, you sometimes do small actions to feel like you are doing something, anything.
I’m back on this page to share an update and recommitment to why I wanted to build my @littlefreelibrary in the first place. I made a linktree (in my bio) if you want to see my requested donations. Thanks to Marissa, Karen, Leanne and Christina for donating some of the books.

RIP to my other classroom goldfish, Ponyo. Ponyo came home with me this summer, and seemed very happy in his summer tank. My kids liked seeing him (in addition to our family fish, Fishy) and I kept the cats away. This morning, when I went to feed him, he was dead. I acquired Ponyo, along with Kiki (diseased last fall) a few summers ago, from a science teacher who was moving. I really liked having goldfish in my classroom and it’s been a joy to my students.
The loss of a fish is a very good entry into talking about death with kids. This isn’t Otto’s very first exposure to the idea, but probably the closest experience of death. We watched a Daniel Tiger clip from when Blue Fish died. We dug a hole and put Ponyo in it and then gathered flowers from around our house. It seemed important to Otto to stick the flowers into the dirt. We decorate a rock next week.
I’m kind of sad, Ponyo was a good fish. Also - Ponyo’s namesake is currently in theaters right now. Super sweet movie.

It’s been a minute. I realized I’ve had two posts since having my second baby LAST MARCH (2023).
Not quite sure how I want to use this anymore but sometimes I find a new book at the library, or listen to a podcast or do a fun activity and I have the want to share about it! So maybe I’ll go back to doing that.

Love an opportunity for real life/literacy/family celebration connections. This week, I had already planned to have a parent come in and teach my class about El Dia De Los Muertos. We collaborated and picked out a book she could read, she had some photos of what her family does, and said she was going to help the students make an altar. Last week, when conversing with this parent, I mentioned how the topic of death might come up, but I’m prepared to support conversations, and many students might have some exposure to it, and/or might have experienced it with the loss of a pet. And then last Friday, my staff and I noticed one of our goldfish, Kiki, the larger of the two, was dead. So today we made an alter (with the mom) for Kiki, our beloved goldfish. It’s beautiful, and one of my favorite things that has ever happened in my classroom.

My kids (yes, there are two now… I had another baby in March) visited my classroom a few weeks ago so I could check on Kiki and Ponyo, our goldfish.
I’m still here on the Internet, mostly using my personal Instagram.
Life is very full.
I can’t fully fathom that the new school year starts in a few weeks.
I would like to be more active on here, and also I would like to throw my phone away. by @mscoramscora

I may have entirely dropped the ball on gifts for my child and husband (sorry guys!!) but I did make these cute recycled crayon hearts for my students… so there’s something!
