Budapest is often photographed for its grand landmarks.
But what keeps bringing me back are the colours between them.
The warm glow of old cafés. The faded façades that wear their history proudly. The reflections on the Danube after rain. The yellow trams cutting through blue hour. Small details that most visitors walk straight past.
These are the moments that give the city its character.
Photography isn't about collecting famous places. It's about learning to recognise light, atmosphere, and the quiet scenes that tell a richer story.
These five photographs are just a glimpse of the Budapest I love to photograph.

If you'd like to experience the city beyond the obvious, I offer private photography workshops for photographers of all levels. Whether you shoot with a phone, mirrorless camera, or Leica, I'll show you the locations, timing, and way of seeing that have shaped my editorial work here over many years.

Bled is beautiful at almost any hour.

It becomes unforgettable when you stop chasing landmarks and start following the light.

That's what we do in my workshops. We slow down, observe, and create photographs that are personal, not predictable.

Istria is made for photographers who know how to slow down.

Stone villages. Empty roads. Mist over the hills. Harsh light, soft light, strange light. Corners that look ordinary until you stand still long enough.

That is what my Istria photography workshops are about: not chasing postcard views, but learning to read a place, wait for the right moment, and build images with intention.

Early morning in Venice, and the brightest thing on the waterfront is a newspaper kiosk.

The gondolas are still covered. The lagoon and sky are almost the same blue-grey. One person stands at the counter, framed by the warm light spilling onto the damp paving.

I like this hour because ordinary things become easier to notice.

Later, people will walk past this kiosk on their way to somewhere more famous.

Here, it holds the whole photograph.

Some photographs describe the world. Others try to remember how it felt.

By allowing detail to dissolve, the familiar becomes uncertain. Trees become marks, distance becomes atmosphere, and the landscape begins to hover somewhere between a real place and a fading memory.

Photography does not always need to explain.
Sometimes its power lies in leaving space for the imagination. Technique matters, but only when it serves the emotion.

The real question is not simply, “Is it sharp?” It is, “Does it stay with me?”

Venice Carnival is colourful, but I like what happens when you put those colours against the city’s winter greys.

Here, the blue and gold fabrics stand out against the stone, while the Bridge of Sighs gives the scene its unmistakable setting.
There’s so much detail in the masks and costumes, yet the glance between these two figures is what keeps drawing me back.

For me, photographing Carnival is about finding that relationship: the people, the place, and the moment they come together.

Some days, Venice disappears a little.

The buildings fade first. Then the horizon. Until only a gondola, the rhythm of an oar, and a few people moving through the grey remain.

This is what draws me to Venice in winter.

The fog leaves room for small things to become the whole story: a gesture, a silhouette, a line across the water. You slow down. You look longer. You begin to notice how little a photograph needs.

Join me for my Winter Photography Workshops in Venice, where we’ll explore light, atmosphere and the art of simplifying a frame.
The fog keeps its own schedule; we bring the learning.
Send me a DM with “FOG” for dates and details.

This is Venice too! (Today)

A very ordinary Venetian afternoon: tourists, a water taxi, people crossing the bridge.
And then two grey naval ships are waiting at the edge of the frame.
Venice has always lived with the sea, but this still feels faintly unsettling. A reminder that history never entirely leaves the city. taken in Venice, Italy by @msecchi

Venice keeps its magic in the space between the grand view and the ordinary day.

A man passes beneath the old lamps. A woman crosses a bridge above a blunt confession on the wall. A weathered saint watches over a narrow calle while a small dog trots home. Laundry hangs like flags between the houses, and beside the Grand Canal two painters try to hold the city still for a moment.

But Venice never stays still. It moves through footsteps, water, stone, gestures and chance encounters.

Perhaps that is why I keep photographing it in black and white: without colour, the distractions fall away, and its quieter stories begin to appear.

Not the Venice that poses, but the one that carries on living when it thinks nobody is looking.

If you’d like to photograph this quieter side of Venice with me, send me a DM for workshop details.
