M.Simons; Come On, Play it Again

Mirthe Klück’s paintings occupy an unstable space between recognition and abstraction. Composed through gestures of throwing, scraping and layering paint, the works evoke the chromatic structure of a familiar Colgate toothpaste tube, while simultaneously recalling the graphic language of corporate logos, pop imagery and other fragments of collective visual memory.
Yet these references remain deliberately unresolved. Forms appear recognisable only to shift upon closer looking, resisting a singular reading. The paintings operate through this tension between the known and the indeterminate, where perception becomes an active process of association, projection and reconfiguration.
Klück approaches painting as a set of conditions rather than a predetermined image. Material decisions initiate the work, while chance, intuition and the inherent behaviour of the medium intervene in its final appearance. Meaning consequently remains fluid: the paintings do not illustrate a fixed subject, but generate a field in which multiple images and associations can momentarily emerge. by @msimons.gallery

This weekend, Marieke Zwart and BarBara Hanlo will open their studios at atelierWG in Amsterdam as part of the annual Open Studios. Both artists are represented by m.simons, and the weekend offers a chance to visit their studios.

On Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, atelierWG opens its doors to the public. This year’s edition is particularly special: puntWG, the exhibition space on the site, will present a survey exhibition featuring almost eighty of the artists who work at the complex. The weekend also marks the presentation of Wil, Verlangen en Bescherming, a new book by artist Noa Giniger documenting the history of the WG site following almost three years of research.

AtelierWG is the largest artist studio complex in the Netherlands, with more than 120 studios. For over forty years, it has been housed in the former Eye and Women’s Clinics of the Wilhelmina Gasthuis. Giniger’s book brings together extensive archival research with stories and photographs by artists, writers and photographers who have worked and continue to work at the site.

The Open Studios take place on 26 and 27 September, from 12–5 pm. A map of the participating studios is available at the studios and at puntWG, WG-plein, opposite no. 80. The survey exhibition opens on Friday 25 September, 5–8 pm, with the presentation of Wil, Verlangen en Bescherming at 6.30 pm. The exhibition will also be open on 3 and 4 October, from 12–5 pm.

We are happy to announce that we will be showing Kristoffer Zeiner in a solo presentation at NAP+, opening 17 September at De Centrale Markthal, Amsterdam.

His paintings move restlessly between abstraction and figuration; a face, a landscape, a creature, before folding back into pure gesture. Nothing settles into one register for long.

He mixes his own paint from raw pigments, oil and turpentine, and makes brushes from unwashed sheep’s wool — building his surfaces slowly, layer upon layer. Mythology, folklore and the imagery of games move through the work as one imaginative world, with neither given more weight than the other.

This presentation also marks a first: alongside his larger canvases, Zeiner shows that this world holds together at small scale too.

m.simons proudly announces the representation of Robbin Heyker

Robbin Heyker (b. 1976) is a Dutch artist living and working in Beijing and The Hague, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Art and runs the artist space Billytown with some colleagues.

His painting practice springs from the baroque tradition of rendering volume by evoking effects of light and shadow. Around 2014, however, he stepped away from the purpose to ‘render’ things or beings in the outside world and focused on making autonomous paintings: flat paintings that primarily speak of painterly matters. From which moment does one have a painting? What are the minimal requirements to be able to speak of a painting? Does one need colour? How to choose a colour? Can a painting be grey? Which grey? How many greys are there? How to compose a grey colour? How to apply the paint to the canvas? Which brush to use? Which fingers? Can we make a painting by scraping away the paint? Is it possible to create a painting following a set of rules? And if there are rules, can one cheat? When is a painting done? What constitutes the magic of a painting? …

We are delighted to welcome m.simons to NAP+ 2026, presenting works by Kristoffer Zeiner. Zeiner’s painterly practice moves between figuration and abstraction, drawing on European folklore, fantasy, and Japanese gaming culture to construct dreamlike, fictional worlds. Working with self-mixed pigments on raw canvas, he builds tactile surfaces where landscapes, objects, and symbols shift between the recognizable and the imagined.
