As a former special education teacher, I worked with young Sikh students who often struggled to navigate their big emotions, the stares, and everything in between. This story is for them. It’s about kids who simply want to be part of the everyday joys of childhood—like learning how to swim—without feeling like they don’t belong.

As a child, I remember these moments feeling full of joy, but looking back, I now see how much my grandparents did to ensure we were treated with dignity and love. That strength shaped me.

At the end of the book, I included intentional questions—especially for Sikh parents—to spark conversations with their children. Talk to your kids about what makes them unique, and teach them to honor the differences in others too.

Children’s books aren’t just for shelves; they’re meant to be explored, discussed, and cherished. This book is dedicated to my Babaji, Bibiji, Nanaji, Naniji, and my millions of nieces and nephews. Everything I do is for you—to make sure you can experience the magic of being a child, and the grace of growing older. I love you all endlessly. by @mskomalk

Today, we honor the working class. The truck drivers, factory workers, farmworkers, service staff, teachers, bus drivers, and custodians who keep this country running every single day.

Growing up as the daughter of a semi-truck driver and a factory worker, Labor Day isn’t just a holiday on the calendar. It’s my origin story. My parents worked tirelessly so I could become the first in our family to graduate college, earn a Master’s degree, and stand up to run for School Board. I am my parents’ dream and I carry their work ethic into everything I do.

Right now, Indiana is actively fighting against our labor workers. Working families are expected to carry the weight of our economy while watching wages squeezed, resources controlled, and public assets sold off.

That fight hits home in our public school districts. Too often, frontline school staff, our teachers, instructional aides, custodians, and drivers are asked to do more with less while district administrative salaries regularly top $100K+.

I am pro-union, pro-transparency, and pro-worker. I believe our tax dollars should prioritize paying our frontline staff fair, living wages before giving salary increases to top administration.

When we protect working families and invest fairly in frontline school staff, we invest in our children’s future. I stand with union workers and frontline labor today, tomorrow, and every day on the school board.

Suicide Prevention Month is a hard 1 for survivors like me that have had to go to shelters out of fear, that have excused normalized abuse, and still continue to do the frontline work bc our trauma and healing drive our work. I see you and take care of yourself because you matter outside the care you provide others.

I’ve been working on this book since Grad School. Collecting research, conducting research, and the journey continues to digest and understand that the systems have existed, but we just need to name them and tweak them.
