Ten years ago we began the mission of everyone feeling the wind in their face. It’s pretty special when the very kids that helped you fundraise over the years give back and become our pushers. Over $20,000 raised and given back to this community over the decade and we couldn’t be more grateful. Dear Dameon Place,
You didn’t ask for me to annoy you, work down the hall from you, AI you, or make videos about you or addressed to you. In fact, God blessed you.

However, when Harry Smith narrated the wonderful video of the Pella Marching Dutch last night revealing that a return to Pasadena for a FOURTH time to the Tournament of Roses 🌹, it got me thinking.

1. Will Tim Pol and Jodi Page Pol let me ride in the bunk of the semi?
2. Does Harry Smith want a uniform? Will it be #letHIMmarch? Could it be #LetThemMarch
3. Can I start giving lessons so that I can be a director and turn the corner?
4. Can I get a camera crew and go behind the scenes?
5. Will the new superintendent understand my band obsession as much as Mr. Ebeling tolerated it?
6. Should we start a podcast?
7. Maybe band boosters should have their face on the trailer like Hy-Vee does.
8. The cross country team is putting together a documentary, do you think Netflix would want my band content?

I’ll stop there … but if you see me with a rose in my mouth running the halls, streets, field, just roll with it.

I’m sure people have ideas …

There is no other human being in this world who has had the impact on my life that Mrs. Roehr had.

Whenever I’ve been asked to “think of a teacher,” I have never had to think. It was always her.

Mrs. Roehr loved me deeply, but she was never afraid to be honest with me. Sometimes that meant tough love; so many other times, tenderness. She held me accountable, checked in, called, listened, and showed up. Sometimes she’d show up and I’d panic about the state of my home.

I was one of the young people she helped succeed and then she never stopped loving me. She changed me. She helped shape who I became. And I know I am only one of hundreds carrying pieces of what she taught us.

If she were here to ask me one more time, “On a scale of 1–10, how are you?” Today, I’m not sure I could give her a number. One-third of our family loves adventures. Two-thirds prefer vacations.

Today, I’m grateful for a best buddy and a child who loves to adventure. So we did. Some places we’d been but with new hikes and new sights with different weather.

So much good.
So much beauty.
So many kind people, beautiful cultures, and bucket-filling moments.

Dameon Place and directors of the Pella Marching Dutch, we are blessed to have you lead our kids. You pivoted, you blessed, you stayed positive, and you provided - all while making amazing memories with humor.

I’m sticking with you in a Zombie Apocalypse.
