dare i say, much of my social media algorithms focus on “christmas in july” right now - decorating the house for a nostalgic holiday feeling and creative ways to make your kid believe in santa.

this year’s anticipation for christmas looks a little different. i find myself going back to our wedding film pretty often, trying to relive the coinciding christmas cheer on top of the best day of my life… that warm, giddy feeling will be hard to replicate this year :)

this beginning of the “holiday” season (i say that loosely due to finding candy corn and pumpkin pie at the store yesterday) also brings an anticipation for our sweet october baby and how our lives will alter and “speed up.” apparently time moves even faster after having children.

anyways, i realized i never shared our wedding film and will also participate in rushing the seasons in order to arrive at the holidays, even if it comes with many emotions.

on september nineteenth, janson came earthside :)

almost one month old, our little preemie is gaining breast milk weight (rapidly), wearing matching sweatsuits (leisurely), learning the difference between day and night (slowly), and seeing mama and bàba’s favorite places (one coffee shop at a time).

each day being “mama” is significantly different, lovely, and humbling. i love the three of us together.

p.s. we are exhausted. don’t let anyone tell you “newborn tired” is better than “pregnant tired” 🤍

janson is one year old!

he likes reading books, fake sneezes, dragonfruit, guava, & holding a “bing bing” (cold drink). our television will occasionally play old Elmo’s World & Bear and the Big Blue House (the same two episodes).

janson has been to four countries (soon to be five) and once survived a 12.5-hour flight! he has garnered the nicknames dance, jan, janson-bubby, 弟弟, 阿旺，and 旺旺。

his parents survived sleepless nights, allergic reactions, and tantrums but have experienced the softest baby cuddles, first steps, and hearing “baba” and “mama” for the first time :)

the first beach,

with taiwan as our temporary home, janson is already breezing through his first summer to-do’s, dipping his toes in ocean water and getting sand stuck in his diaper!

our first year of marriage has been one of contentment, celebrations, and transitions. last december, we recited vows under warm-lit christmas trees and honeymooned in the mountains!

this christmas season, we’ve grown older and nurtured our own family, relentlessly choosing each other every morning. although the year tightly packaged a lifetime of changes into twelve months, it is less daunting and more unforgettable with you.

you are a gentle husband, an intentional 爸爸, a witty filmmaker, and a undeniably lovely man. I love you, ian. thank you for making life fuller and merrier. by @msmadisonwang

Usually, when you’re asked “How’s dad/mom life?”, there’s always pressure to only list the happy things, or at least make a positive-negative-positive sandwich of a response. Reality is, it really hasn’t been easy. We took the time during this ice storm to write and shoot a poetic narrative shedding light on the tip of the iceberg of emotions we feel as Janson’s Baba and Mama :)

Barcelona, baby!

Janson’s first international trip meeting 爺爺 and 奶奶, sightseeing, and sleeping soundly on planes. With our flight delayed three days due to weather, little baby relaxed on a massive hotel bed and celebrated El Día de los Reyes Magos!

30 weeks with our boy!

as our pregnancy journey approaches the final stages, ian wanted to capture little third trimester moments, to decorating the nursery and cuddling his first stuffed animals to feeling him kick and spending moments together before “媽媽” and “爸爸.”

feeling like a stranger to myself is worth every second of the physical challenges, knowing janson will be earthside in few months.
