My installation ‘Partition # 8 (sound clouds & shields), iteration III’ is part of the group exhibition ‘One Way Ticket’ at @stichtingodapark The exhibition can be experienced until 3 January 2027.

It takes a village to build this artwork. A forever thank you to my great build-up team Niels Albers, Bart Schalekamp, Loïs Overbosch, Felix Meijer and Caspar Stalenhoef for the great energy and hard work.
@n.i.e.l.s.a.l.b.e.r.s @bartschalekamp @loisadaja @casparus

And a special thank you to curator @louisavergozisi and director Herman van den Muijsenberg @shigoto_show and the whole team and volunteers of Odapark.

Images: ©Charlott Markus / Build up of “Partition #8 (sound clouds & shields), iteration III”. Mixed media audio installation (textile curtains, metal corner beads, masonry string, loudspeakers, metal wires).

Part of the exhibition text:

“ONE WAY TICKET

With works by Charlott Markus, Antoine Berghs, Vicky Filippa and Remy Neumann.

A one-way ticket to Venray” was for a long time a well-known expression for admission to a psychiatric institution. For many, this also meant a forced isolation from society. In the twentieth century, Venray grew into the psychiatric center of Limburg, with separate facilities for men and women. Patients were treated there according to the insights of the time, but often lost their individuality and autonomy in the process.

Drawing on this history, guest curator Louisa Vergozisi curates the exhibition One Way Ticket. She brings together four artists who, each from their own practice, explore identity, consciousness, spirituality, and the post-humanist. Their work shows that the human psyche cannot be easily captured or defined.”

I’m always grateful for project spaces! They give you the freedom to try things out, show something unfinished, share something that’s still taking shape, or simply put something out there that’s still finding its place in the world. These spaces are so important. Thank you @sutomesen for the invitation.

Opening Friday 21 Aug from 5 to 7 pm @30m3___ ! Come join us over a drink at Zeeburgerdijk 25, Amsterdam!

30m3__ invited artist Charlott Markus for an intervention in the space and window. We present ‘Meandering - an interlude’, a body of work that is rarely shown. The drawings and weave on view are the outcome of Charlott’s meditation practice. Created in the moments between larger projects, they reflect the meandering nature of making: the quiet moments in which thoughts wander, settle and slowly take shape.

The presentation that is presented at 30m3_ is conceived as a pause between larger projects, an opportunity to open up parts of the artist’s practice that usually remain private, and share them with fellow artists, neighbours and visitors.

As part of the presentation, Staci Bu Shea / @staci.bushea has created a short meditation inspired by Charlott’s drawings.
The meditation will take place on Wednesday 2 September at 4pm, in both the space with a very limited number of guests and online for those to who would like to join from home. Write to @msmarkus to register for a spot or to get the link.

Staci is a curator, writer, death doula, and care guide. Learn more about their practice via stacibushea.info

Charlott Markus (b. 1974, Ystad, Sweden) lives and works in Amsterdam.
@msmarkus

Directly inside the studio are two exhibition models. I love a good model, especially from artists working with specific architectural elements. The two here were made for a few of Markus’ recent exhibitions: The 18th International Textile Triennial in Lodz, and for the
Amsterdam Museum.

We spend most of the visit talking about the work for Amsterdam titled Partition #9 (sphere for Thea). It’s a sensitive and tender work that takes a deeply transfeminist stance on the interior worlds we inhabit and the safety that private spaces provide. A wicker reclining
chair was the only piece of furniture in the room. Just like in the living room of Thea, a friend of Markus who chose to make her living room a personal space for reflection and solitude.

After Thea’s passing, the exhibition is an ode to her agency of life, to grief, and her hopeful influence on the lives of many people for freedom and dignity.

Markus’ textiles show a learned artisanry of working with this material in which unexpected patterns, complex designs, and expert colour combinations show the artist’s experience both with thread and digital imaging software to create such a density of layers. Before working with textile, Markus was a photographer, and still uses that knowledge as a base for her current practice. The thick and colorful tapestries replete with symbolism and meaning that result from this process are sculptural and architectural. They create enclaves and nodes,
sound-resistant shrouds for mental and emotional intimacy. taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @msmarkus

Recap Venice biennale preview 2026 (1/4):

What remains for me from the preview days at the Venice Biennale is not only the beauty, subtle strength, and emotional depth of many works in some pavilions, in exhibitions across the city, and in the late Koyo Kouoh’s In Minor Keys. Equally present is the friction between tenderness and the deeply ingrained structures surrounding the biennale and the world beyond it.

In my experience, it is often the poetic works that speak the loudest. A lingering feeling of melancholy, of something unresolved, stays with me but also a slight feeling of something new. I feel deeply grateful for the encounters, conversations, and experiences these days made possible.

I refused to enter several national pavilions representing states committing war crimes and waging war. Their presence made clear that no exhibition, however sensitive or poetic, exists outside politics.

Lastly, sincere thanks to the Mondriaan Fund for inviting me to attend the Venice Biennale preview alongside a selected group of artists. Their trust in and commitment to artistic practices such as ours, and their support for critical artistic work and a diverse art climate, made these encounters and exchanges possible. by @msmarkus
