💔On March 14, 2018 there was a national school walkout one month after the Parkland shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. I took my students out to the yard at 10am and we sat in silence for 17 minutes, one minute for each of the lives taken away that day.

We were the only ones out on the yard and it felt lonely, but was an example to my students of how much power lies in simple actions. In a class full of boisterous kids, not one person talked the entire time. They were 10 and 11 years old at the time, but they knew the gravity of situation. They are now in high school, and are probably asking, “Why hasn’t anything changed?”

I’m at such a loss for words and deeply feeling my emotions. Just wondering, what would a nation-wide school walkout look like 5 years later? 📷: @mistahhjay_ by @msmcguir

After 17 years of pouring my heart and soul into what I believe is the most important job in the world, I decided with @gtallen18 that it was time to step away. I need to take care of myself, nourish my own health, and continue this never ending journey to start a family. The goodbyes were perfect, everyone in their own time sharing their well wishes, helping me see the value of my service to our amazing school.

I have had the honor of seeing my former students move forward in the world to be thoughtful, intelligent, spunky, unique, and most importantly unapologetically themselves. They add value to those around them and it is, and has been my hope, that they create positive change and leave their community a better place. Thank you for bringing light into my life.

While many people find space to process and reflect on gun control, mental health, and the state of schools and education in the United States at home or at an office, we will go in into an environment where we’re forced to contemplate our own mortality and how priceless the lives of our students are. We will think about what would we do and how would we respond. We will need to address this issue with our students, and try to delicately and gracefully navigate a discussion so morally obtrusive to their young hearts and souls. None of us signed up for this, yet all of us will do this.
