Exploring an abandoned school in northern Minnesota today was insane. It opened in the early 1900s and ran for generations before finally shutting down in the late 2010s.

Years of flooding in the area slowly destroyed parts of the building, and repairs kept getting more expensive until it wasn’t realistic to keep it running. Eventually, it closed and the doors were locked for good.

When it shut down, it really affected the town this was where a lot of people grew up, and seeing it go empty felt like losing a piece of the community’s history. by @msp.matt

We’d been inside for about an hour when security caught us, but they let us continue through the building. It closed in 2023 after decades in the community. Memberships had been dropping for years, and after COVID fewer people came back. Running a building this large was expensive, and eventually it just didn’t make sense to keep it open.

Well heading to Atlanta. We got news a girl had fallen and died at the Stranger Things filming location, but we still managed to get in past security. So glad I got to this spot. #strangerthings #atlanta by @msp.matt

With the decline of malls happening everywhere, this is one I’ll always remember. We explored for well over two hours, checking out everything we could and even pretending to be security for a while.

The atmosphere of the place felt straight out of the early days of malls, like time had just stopped there. Walking through it really makes you think about how many places like this used to be packed with life. by @msp.matt
