In the 1970s, thousands of Vietnamese refugees came to America in search of safety and a better life. Many found a new home along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where the water offered both familiarity and a way forward.

The Fisher People tells the story of the Vietnamese Americans who built lives, families and communities on the Coast while navigating hardship, discrimination and the challenges of starting over.

📺 The Fisher People premieres October 2 at 8:30 p.m. on MPB TV.
The four-part series airs Fridays on MPB TV, with each episode available on PBS the same day.

What a special evening celebrating the stories of our Coast! On September 22, we rolled out the red carpet at the Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum for a VIP screening of The Fisher People, in partnership with MSUTV/MSU Films, the Mississippi Gulf Coast National Heritage Area, Mississippi Public Broadcasting, and the museum.

This Emmy Award-winning documentary series follows Vietnamese refugees who made the Mississippi Gulf Coast their home after the Vietnam War, rebuilding their lives through the fishing and seafood industries. Their stories of resilience, family, and community are an important part of our Coast’s history and identity. We are proud to have supported this project through our Heritage Community Grant program.

A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who helped make this red carpet event possible:

🦐 Butcher Baker for catering a wonderful meal featuring fresh seafood, and Ocean Springs Seafood, LLC for helping bring the flavors of the Coast to the table. Butcher Baker is part of our Outpost Program through Food, Booze & Hiccups, connecting local food and hospitality with our region’s heritage.

🏛️ The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum and its staff for hosting and helping bring this evening together.

🌿 Pine Hills for the beautiful plants that helped set the scene.

Thank you also to the legislators who joined us and MDMR Executive Director Joe Spraggins for supporting our coastal stories. Most of all, thank you to the people who shared their experiences for this film, helping preserve them for future generations.

📺 Watch The Fisher People on MPB Television on Fridays at 8:30 p.m. Central, October 2–23, with a new episode each week!

Watch online through MSU Films.
