Huge thanks to Laurie Haycock Makela for joining our senior professional studio class for a guest lecture. Your framework of obsession, materials, means, and audience gave our students a powerful lens for their own work, and your generosity with your time and insight made this session unforgettable. Thank you for sharing your experience with the next generation of designers!

Big thanks to @troyalders for an inspiring presentation to our History of Graphic Design students. Hearing from a creative leader at Lucasfilm about his journey through Star Wars design, maintaining creativity over decades, and embracing AI as a tool sparked genuine hope and perspective in our classroom. Our students left with a powerful reminder that you learn most when you’re wrong, your opinions matter, and filling your life with art keeps your creativity alive.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for Grafik Intervention at the BG Grain Mill! It was a powerful evening of community dialogue, design, and reflections for our @grafik_intervention_bg.grain team.

We’re now reviewing the questionnaire card responses and gathering insights from the night and we look forward to sharing more soon.

The community presence helped bring these stories to light. Thank you!

Photography by Jed Sanford (@bozefoto) who gets a super special thank you for showing-up with all the pro photo gear including a drone.

Everyone is invited to a 1-hour “Pop-Up Show” for Yellowstone Digital on Thursday, June 4th, from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. This exhibition of undergraduate digital photography created in the PHOT 360 summer course will be hosted in the Montana Room on the 3rd floor of Norm Asbjornson Hall.

The one-of-a-kind summer field course is inspired by the motto “Mountains & Minds,” and the legacy of pioneer photographer Jack Ellis Haynes, that expands the MSU teaching environment into the National Park system.

The pop-up event is free and open to the public of all ages, with easy parking in the campus pay-lot garage. by @msugdsn

Summer experiential learning is here!

Two classes are kicking off the summer semester that both offer experiential learning.

In Yellowstone Digital, students head into Yellowstone Park to develop their photo practice in one of the most stunning outdoor environments.

In Grafik Intervention, students research underutilized or abandoned buildings around Bozeman, then project graphics and historical narratives onto the facades, reclaiming forgotten spaces and raising community awareness.

Documentation takes on many forms. This summer, students document Yellowstone’s landscape and Bozeman’s historic architecture, creating work that shifts how we see these places! by @msugdsn

Studio visit @ae.sma.design

Big thanks to A&E+SMA Design for hosting our senior graphic design class! We had a great visit which included an introduction to how integrated architecture and design works in the studio, walking through several integrated design projects, and connecting with an all MSU Graphic Design alumni team.

We especially appreciated the conversations around design process, collaboration, and how projects come together from concept to completion. Hearing different perspectives across the team gave our students a clearer sense of how dynamic and interconnected a creative practice can be...and they also have the best stickers.
