There’s a new glow at LIRR Yaphank-BNL station! We’re excited to unveil a radiant new artwork by artist Karen Arm.

Titled “Initium (beginning),” @karendarmcat’s mosaic welcomes visitors to the new LIRR Yaphank-BNL station plaza with a radiant depiction of an astronomical “globular cluster” — millions of stars tightly bound together. Located near Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), the artwork serves as an artistic counterpart to the scientific exploration happening just beyond the station.

Where @brookhavenlab scientists study the universe at scales invisible to the human eye, Arm’s mosaic brings the vast and celestial down to earth, inviting viewers to discover the luminous patterns unfolding across its surface.

Earlier this year @nytransitmuseum and @mtaartsdesign partnered with artists featured in the "Inspired by MetroCard" exhibition, currently on view in the Museum’s Grand Central Gallery and Store. As part of this collaboration, artists Nina Boesch @ninaboesch, Thomas McKean @thomasmckean_nyc, VH McKenzie @vhmckenzie, Juan Carlos Pinto @pintocards, and Nina Vishneva @nina.vishneva visited one New York City Public High School art classroom in each borough and worked with students to help them create their own artworks using MetroCards to pay tribute to the iconic fare media. During these visits, students also learned about Arts & Design's diverse programming and gained insight on building portfolios and participating in open calls.

Now on view at 42 St–Bryant Park: “Fake Plants” by Nina Katchadourian (@ninakatchadourian) 🌱

This photographic installation features imaginative sculptural plant forms crafted from everyday materials—cardboard, paper scraps, ping pong balls, disposable masks, and more—transformed into inventive “botanical” specimens. Displayed as larger-than-life images along a shared horizon line, the works invite MTA customers to look twice: first seeing plants, then recognizing the ordinary objects reshaped into art.

Katchadourian, who is currently featured in the Venice Biennale, encourages viewers to find creativity in the familiar, offering a moment of curiosity in the rush of the commute. by @mtaartsdesign

We mourn the loss and celebrate the life of artist, poet, philanthropist, and visionary Danny Simmons (1953-2026). Alongside his brothers Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons of the legendary hip-hop group Run-DMC and Russell Simmons, he co-founded the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, which has provided students and emerging artists with mentorship and support for over 30 years. Simmons also led the Rush Arts Gallery and Corridor Gallery, championing Black artists early in their careers. We look forward to honoring Simmons and his legacy with an unveiling of his MTA Arts & Design commission, to be installed at Jamaica Bus Depot later this year.

Happy Pride Weekend, New York! 🌈

If you're headed to today's @NYCPride March, we're providing additional service on the 1 train to get you to and from the festivities. Expect larger crowds than usual around 14 St and 23rd St stations. Some entrances at these stations will be exit-only or entrance-only.

On May 7, we welcomed photographer Christopher Payne (@christopherpaynephoto) for a live taping of the public‑radio program “Person Place Thing” at the @nytransitmuseum. The conversation captured everything we admire about his work: curiosity, craft, and the ability to reveal unexpected beauty inside some of @mta’s most complex spaces.

During the event, we also shared exciting news: Payne is returning to the MTA to photograph new behind‑the‑scenes locations for an exhibition launching this September. We can’t wait to show you what he discovers.
