being an aunty v being a mom
•
I genuinely thought being an aunty would be so much easier, because I had been a mom for already half a decade.
•
in fact, being an aunty made me a better mom in so many ways.
•
because being an aunty isn’t a role you’re assigned. it’s one you keep choosing.
•
and when there’s no role in the way, you see the kid. not the birth order, not the “good one,” not the one who needs the most managing. just them.
•
they feel that. they know when someone is looking at the job and when someone is looking at them.
•
that’s what I want them to learn from me — that they’re worthy of being seen for who they are, and worthy of being chosen without obligation.
•
not tolerated. not owed. not loved because someone has to. picked, on purpose, every time.
•
you don’t have to be convenient to be someone’s favourite.
•
being a mom, it’s easy to let the role do the talking.
being an aunty reminded me the choosing is the whole point. 🫶🏽

we took a “field trip” to the @romtoronto this week
•
as a mother it’s so easy to get caught up in trying to do ALL the things over summer break ☀️
•
that’s why the #canadastrong promotional offer for kids made this visit so much easier for parents to check more off the summer bucket list .
•
when you bring a child ages 2-17 to the local attractions that let you explore the richness of the country we are in. no air fare required ✈️
•
i love to especially share my indigenous ancestry with the children at places like this! 🧡
•
with some additional exhibits and experiences, no two visits have to be the same.

learning every day 💛

i wish someone could’ve told me how comfortable you need to be with yourself to be someone’s mom or dad.
cause the past creeps up on you! you begin to see what you did wrong and right - and we as parents get to explain that (or not) to our next generation.
•

everything you thought you knew, you question.
you seek justice and fairness more fearlessly.
you demand balance.
you seek wisdom in those around you; lessons to learn, instead of feel.
you seek freedom, and safety for your children.
but most importantly, you define where “home” is, or WHAT home is.

•

I thank God I am blessed with people who know and love my children as their own, but it wasn’t always this way. Defining home meant using all the courage, determination and accountability I could, to change our story.

•

by far the most important aspect of surviving all of it, would be to find your guiding light. ⭐️

find the place or the people who remind you, of you. not the people who do not permit change, but the people who know your heart and can ground you. 🌱

i love all of my friends who have supported me directly with my children or indirectly as they inspire me to be more authentic and open with my heart.

if you’re a single mom, or dad.
it can be hard, but the joy of watching your baby become a little person in this world, is unmatched. they will one day become everything you could’ve only dreamed of.
