We don’t just sell books, we love them! #mtcloudbookshop #readlocalph
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟎

First drafted in 2010, revisited and renewed in 2025, now with a stronger sense of who we are, what we do, and why we do what we do—here's the full list of our 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞:

1. First and foremost, Mt Cloud Bookshop belongs in and to Baguio City.

2. Above all else, our shelves are for Philippine Literature. We maintain a ratio of 90% Filipiniana to 10% foreign-published books.

3. We seek out and support titles about the Philippine Cordillera, by local and Indigenous writers, artists, and publishers.

4. Works of small, independent publishers, firebrand authors, and zine-makers are welcome here.

5. We believe book curation and access are political, as is reading.

6. We respect writers and their labor, book production and its laborers.

7. We are intentional in our efforts to be in community and hold space for diverse voices and stories.

8. We gather people around books. We bring people together for children’s storytelling sessions, open mic nights, book launches, authors’ talks, Read Aloud Gatherings for grownups (RAG), and other creative gatherings.

9. We know the pleasure of browsing. Go ahead, pick a book from our shelves and spend hours with it in the bookshop, without interruption or pressure to buy.

10. We don’t just sell books, we love them—and their readers, too!

𝘾𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣: 𝘼𝙣 𝙊𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 𝙤𝙛 𝙍𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝙋𝙝𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙖 𝘼𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙖𝙙𝙟𝙖𝙤𝙨 (1995) is a pioneering study by Bruno Bottignolo of the religious thought, beliefs, and practices of the Badjaos.

The Badjaos, also known as “Sea Gypsies,” are an indigenous seafaring people who live across the islands and coastal waters stretching from northeastern Borneo to Mindanao. In this book, Bottignolo focuses particularly on the Badjaos of Tawi-Tawi.

As the book’s blurb explains, “Much of Badjao ritual, exemplified by the central Pag-umboh ceremony, revolves around the sun. … hence the book’s title.” Bottignolo presents a distinctive religious worldview deeply rooted in cosmic symbols, offering a glimpse into the rich and complex ways different cultures understand the sacred and their place in the universe.
