Finally had a moment to see Odysseus Wick last night (in liemax). The choppy editing/dialogue dump at the beginning was rough but I quickly settled in once the story was moving along.

This is certainly one of Nolan’s more iconic movies and it is impressive how he managed to make 3 hours engaging, though at the expense of pretty much ANY ponderance or quiet moments. Every scene was paced like we had no time to spare. As soon as the cyclops lays down for example, Matt Damon goes “I think he’s asleep!” almost immediately, I burst out laughing at that.

The fact that it’s so dialogue heavy and character driven is also a detriment to this movie. It being shot on 70mm IMAX film, I really expected more gorgeous wide spectacular shots of nature. We get some shots like that but most of the film we’re seeing shallow depth of field closeups on characters who are desperately trying to get their lines out before the 3 minutes of film runs out.

The climax was very exciting and enrapturing. As I alluded to it’s basically Matt Damon’s John Wick moment. Cool but very over the top action, and most of the movie treats Odysseus like a superhero, which, it’s based on a myth so fair enough.

One problem I have is some of the performances were a bit stiff (tom holland lookin’ atcha) but the ones that had personality really stood out. Robert Pattinson helped keep my interest high anytime he was around. Very fun to hate his character.

I think I’ll still try to go see this in real IMAX 70mm before it ends. I want to see if the extra image real estate changes my feelings about the image not feeling as grand as I expected.

As far as Nolan rankings go for me, it’s probably more mid tier when it comes to my nostalgia. It’s certainly better than Dark Knight Rises and Tenet but can’t even touch movies like Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Knight, the Prestige. Nolan has far too many bangers for this to hit the top of my list. It is however a cinematic historical achievement to shoot a full movie on imax film so I applaud that, i just hope next time he does it there’s more intentionality and grandiosity to the visuals. 8/10 for me but had a good time for sure. by @mteleha

“What we find in a soulmate is not something wild to tame but something wild to run with.”—Robert Brault

Exploring a rainforest together at the edge of the world, Aotearoa, “land of the long white cloud”. The waterfall was our destination, but it was also all about the journey. 😍

I was super excited to take River to see Raimi’s first Spider-Man movie in the theater last night. This was the only Spider-Man movie I’d ever actually missed in the original run so it was a memorable experience. River had a blast watching this origin from beginning to end, jumping at the surprises, laughing at the silly parts, applauding with the audience at the end. He’s looking forward to Spider-Man 3 (his current favorite) in a couple weeks, as is Peter Parkbear 😄 by @mteleha
